Transforming Tiny Living: Inside CIAO’s Micro Flat in London
Local architecture studio CIAO has made significant strides in compact living design with their recent project, a remarkable 25-square-metre micro flat in Islington, London. This innovative design showcases how effective space utilization can create multifunctional areas that enhance everyday living while maintaining a sense of calm.
Functional Design Meets Aesthetic Appeal
CIAO, which stands for Creative Ideas and Architecture Office, has purposefully organized the micro flat around a central dividing wall crafted from birch plywood. This wall doesn’t merely separate spaces; it features integrated functionalities such as a table, a TV console, and a wardrobe. The design is not only aesthetically pleasing but also maximizes utility in an area where every square meter counts.
A Delicate Balance
One of the key challenges faced by CIAO was to navigate the constraints of a compact footprint while ensuring privacy and functionality across the apartment. Diego Dalpra, co-founder of CIAO, highlighted the goal of creating a layout that feels continuous and fluid. Instead of a fragmented arrangement of rooms, the apartment embraces openness and visual connections, making it feel spacious.
Smart Space Management
The design employs bespoke joinery and integrated storage to delineate various living zones—sleeping, living, and service areas—without harsh separations. Each space is distinctly defined yet elegantly interconnected. For instance, the living area is tucked beside the plywood wall, featuring essential elements like storage solutions, a mounted TV, and a small round table that extends from the corner, promoting multifunctional use.
Cozy Comfort
The bedroom, retreating behind the plywood wall, is equipped with built-in hanging and drawer storage. On the opposite side, a plywood unit under the windows adds additional shelving and bench seating, enhancing the compact living experience while providing functionality. This careful consideration of layout ensures that both comfort and utility are maximized.
Kitchen and Storage Innovations
The kitchen runs along one wall and acts as an integral component of the overall design. A cleverly designed mezzanine provides essential overhead storage, accessed via a ladder to keep the apartment free from clutter. The bathroom and utility room are the only entirely enclosed spaces, which are discreetly concealed behind a door crafted from the same birch plywood.
A Calming Color Palette
CIAO has opted for a neutral color scheme that promotes tranquility. White walls, birch paneling, and timber floors come together to create a soothing interior. Accents of green emerge in the kitchen cabinets and soft furnishings, introducing life and vibrancy without overwhelming the senses.
Embracing Natural Light
Natural light is thoughtfully distributed throughout the flat through the use of translucent, reeded glass in the central wall. This feature not only permits light to flow between the kitchen and bathroom but also ensures privacy is maintained, which is critical in such a compact space. Dalpra remarks that this design principle helps cultivate comfort and calmness in the living environment.
Inspiration in Micro Living
CIAO’s micro flat serves as a compelling example in the realm of micro living. The studio’s focus on clarity, material restraint, and organized spatial flow proves that even the smallest of spaces can offer a high-quality living experience. The design resonates with recent trends in urban architecture, emphasizing that thoughtful, innovative design can create a sense of home, regardless of size.
Explorations in micro living continue to evolve, with CIAO paving the way for sustainable, functional approaches to compact urban living. This project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when creativity meets necessity, inspiring future developments in residential architecture.
