Switzerland-based electrification and automation technology provider ABB has been hired to upgrade the automation and control systems on an offshore platform, which operates approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Aberdeen at one of the UK’s largest North Sea oil fields.
ABB has secured a significant contract to modernize the automation and control systems on the Buzzard platform, a vital asset operated by CNOOC Petroleum Europe, a subsidiary of China’s CNOOC. This upgrade is poised to enhance the operational safety and efficiency of the Buzzard field, renowned for being one of the UK’s top oil producers. The field has been in operation since achieving first oil production in 2007.
Nicolas Alonso, the Head of ABB’s Energy Industries division for the UK, Ireland, and Azerbaijan, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This project reflects our longstanding relationship with CNOOC’s UK business and our shared commitment to safe and reliable operations. By modernizing the existing automation systems, we can help support UK energy security amid increasing demand.”
The modernization effort will specifically target ABB’s existing ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system and the Safeguard 400 safety system. By phasing the upgrade, ABB plans to implement essential updates while ensuring the platform’s ongoing operations, minimizing downtime and reducing the associated risks normally linked with such projects.
The engineering team responsible for this project will be based in Aberdeen. They will also leverage an onshore reference system for testing and evaluation purposes. This dual approach enables ABB to verify upgrades in a controlled environment before deploying them offshore, enhancing safety and reducing disruptions while maintaining continuous production cycles.
In addition to the Buzzard platform upgrade, ABB’s recent endeavors include completing critical projects such as a propulsion systems upgrade for a fleet of liquefied natural gas carriers operated by Cool Company (CoolCo). Such projects showcase ABB’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the energy sector.
