Archipelago Yachts 80 Series: Redefining Yacht Design

Navigating Luxury: The Archipelago 80 Yacht Series

With a distinct emphasis on bluewater cruising and the advantages inherent in twin hulls, UK-based Archipelago Yachts is charting uncharted waters in the yacht-building industry. The signing of hull number two in the Archipelago 80 yacht series marks a significant milestone, showcasing an array of innovative features and amenities that surpass expectations for vessels in this size category.

A Foundation Built on Personal Passion

The Archipelago 80 series represents the first foray into the superyacht realm for Archipelago Yachts. Founded by Stephen Weatherley in 2021, the brand emerged from a personal quest for a yacht that catered to his specific preferences—namely, day tripping and fishing. Weatherley sought a vessel with speed and stability to navigate challenging seas, leading him to collaborate with Chartwell Marine, a respected naval architecture studio based in Southampton, England. This partnership resulted in the debut model, the Archipelago 47, showcasing the potential of catamarans and setting the stage for future endeavors.

    Engineered for Performance and Versatility

At the heart of the Archipelago 80 is a proven hull form originally designed for the offshore wind industry. This hull design features a shallow draft of just 3 feet 3 inches (1 meter), enhancing flexibility for owners who prefer to anchor in more secluded, shallow bays. Complementing this is a hybrid propulsion package—optional waterjets enable a thrilling top speed of 30 knots, ensuring that adventures are both swift and efficient.

    A Shift Towards In-House Innovation

Currently, hull number two is in the design stage, with construction set to commence early next year. One significant change lies in Archipelago Yachts’ decision to move operations to a new shipyard on the Isle of Wight, allowing greater control over design, engineering, and construction. Previously reliant on external shipyards, the company now manages research and development, particularly focusing on low- and zero-carbon emissions technologies. “Bringing the interior design in-house allows us to push the boundaries even further,” states Weatherley, emphasizing the enhanced customization options available to future owners.

    Redefining Yachting Luxury

The Archipelago 80’s design offers exciting possibilities that cater to a range of lifestyles. For instance, the yacht features a larger-capacity helipad perched atop the wheelhouse, meticulously designed by Chartwell Marine to accommodate not just helicopters but also amphibious vehicles and personal subs. A robust crane system makes launching and retrieving these water toys effortless.

Inside, the yacht is fully customizable, with various configurations available to match the owner’s lifestyle. Opting for an extensive galley can dramatically enhance the experience for those intending to utilize the yacht for long-range voyages, spanning up to an impressive 5,500 nautical miles. Additionally, the spacious layout can accommodate up to 16 passengers, which is ideal for family gatherings or entertaining a large group of friends. Wellness enthusiasts may also request features such as a gym and sauna, making it a true retreat at sea.

    Rising Demand and Future Aspirations

Stephen Weatherley expressed his enthusiasm about securing the design contract for the second Archipelago 80, viewing it as both an exciting business opportunity and a clear reflection of market demand. “It represents another step in our mission to redefine what a sub-24m explorer yacht can be,” he asserts. This mission underscores Archipelago Yachts’ commitment to crafting vessels that are not only luxurious but also functional and environmentally conscious.
