    The NeuConnect project is making significant strides towards creating the first direct energy transmission link between the UK and Germany. With over 350 kilometers of offshore and onshore cable laid, the project has reached a landmark halfway point in its cabling program. This exciting development not only marks the three-year anniversary of the major onshore construction that commenced in July 2020 but also coincides with the first anniversary of the Kensington Treaty. This treaty represents a pivotal agreement between the UK and German governments to strengthen their bilateral ties.

    A Testament to Cooperation

    British Ambassador to Germany, Andrew Mitchell, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “As we mark the first anniversary of the Kensington Treaty, this project is a clear example of how strong UK-German cooperation delivers real benefits for both our countries.” The NeuConnect initiative is expected to enhance both nations’ energy security, bolster their economic partnership, and support shared climate goals. Mitchell’s remarks underline the broader implications of the project, showcasing how international cooperation can yield tangible benefits.

    The Engineering Backbone

    The cabling program is being led by the Italian multinational Prysmian Group, which is responsible for laying the submarine cables. These efforts began in late 2024, with the cable-laying vessel (CLV) Leonardo da Vinci having successfully completed its tasks in UK waters by March 2024. The vessel has now moved into Dutch waters, progressing towards Germany. This engineering feat demonstrates the advanced capabilities of modern technology in addressing pressing energy challenges.

    Meanwhile, onshore construction is gaining momentum with Siemens Energy having delivered all 14 transformers required for the link. The converter stations, which stand at 24 meters high and 70 meters wide in both the UK and Germany, have reached their full height, with cladding works currently underway. This infrastructure showcases not just engineering excellence but also the commitment of all stakeholders involved.

    Strategic Partnerships and Future Readiness

    Beyond construction, NeuConnect is proactive in ensuring that all necessary commercial arrangements, IT systems, and processes are in place ahead of the start of operations. Earlier this year, Supercharge was appointed as the market integration platform provider, which speaks to the project’s forward-thinking approach to ensuring smooth operational dynamics once the link becomes live.

    The NeuConnect interconnector will create what is described as an “invisible energy highway,” capable of transferring 1.4 GW of electricity—enough to power approximately 1.5 million homes in either direction. This monumental task involves the installation of converter stations in two key locations: the Isle of Grain in Kent, UK, and Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany.

    Timeline and Expectations

    Construction at the UK site on the Isle of Grain began in the summer of 2023, while activity in Germany is expected to kick off by May 2024. The ambitious timeline aims for the interconnector to be operational by 2028, further enhancing both countries’ energy portfolios and illustrating their commitment to transitioning toward sustainable energy sources.
