A New Dawn for the Yacht Halcyon: A Comprehensive Reconstruction
“What started as a refit became something much closer to a modified new build,” reflects Capt. Joe Gallegos of the yacht Halcyon. This transformation is thanks to the combined efforts of a “knowledgeable and enthusiastic owner” and the shipyard that originally crafted her 25 years ago. Feadship regards Halcyon as one of the most extensive reconstructions undertaken by its Feadship Refit & Services division, a project that stands as a testament to quality craftsmanship and innovative engineering.
Return to Roots: The Journey of Halcyon
Originally launched as Northern Light, the yacht has experienced a journey spanning two decades, passing through several owners’ hands. In May of last year, Halcyon returned to La Kaag, The Netherlands—the very shipyards that built her steel hull and aluminum superstructure. This moment held profound significance, underscoring the inception of Feadship Refit & Services in 2018, dedicated to maintaining the essence of its longstanding brand through original construction knowledge.
The Scope of the Refurbishment
When Halcyon arrived at the shipyard, expectations centered around a significant refit. The initial plans included redesigning her stern, upgrading various pieces of equipment, and repainting her from top to bottom. However, the journey unfolded differently as the refit team discovered additional needs once they opened up her decks. The stark technological gap between her original launch and the demands of modern cruising compelled the owner to expand the worklist. Despite these updates, Halcyon was able to retain her timeless elegance throughout this evolution.
Visible Changes: The Exterior Makeover
After fourteen months of extensive work, Halcyon emerged from the sheds with striking visual updates. New teak decking graces most exterior areas, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The yacht’s hull and superstructure have undergone a refreshing repaint, while the entire underwater coating was replaced following a thorough sandblasting. Among the notable changes is a revamped mast, designed to accommodate today’s more compact satellite communications equipment. However, the most significant transformation is undoubtedly the redesign of her stern, featuring a new stairway leading from the main aft deck to the swim platform, thanks to De Voogt Naval Architects.

Interior Innovations: Modern Comfort Meets Classic Design
Beyond external enhancements, Halcyon received considerable attention to her interior systems. The yacht now boasts entirely new air conditioning fan coils and handlers, ensuring optimal climate control for guests and crew alike. Refrigeration and cold-stowage mechanicals have been overhauled, along with a complete upgrade of the electrical systems.
The wheelhouse was not left out, gaining a full suite of new electronics and support infrastructure. Furthermore, new alarm, monitoring, and power-management systems provide the captain and crew with increased operational efficiency. Particularly noteworthy is the engine room, where nearly a complete overhaul occurred. New generators have been installed, and the Caterpillar engines, along with associated mechanical elements, were refurbished. Fuel-management systems, tanks, and ventilation underwent similar refreshes to meet modern standards.

A Touch of Elegance: Renovated Décor
The modernization process extended to every nook and cranny of Halcyon. Every component, from freshwater production systems to sewage treatment facilities, received meticulous attention. Stylish upgrades were also made to the décor in guest staterooms and crew cabins, enhancing the yacht’s elegance. The mahogany wood paneling and en suite bath marbles now showcase a renewed shine, promising a luxurious atmosphere onboard.
Even the lazarette underwent improvements, with upgraded dive gear to cater to the adventurous spirit of her new owner. This touches upon Feadship’s commitment to not only restoring Halcyon but also modernizing her for contemporary cruising adventures.
