West Natuna Exploration Limited Partners with PT PAL Indonesia for Major Contract
In a noteworthy development in the offshore energy sector, West Natuna Exploration Limited (WNEL), a majority-owned subsidiary of Singapore’s Conrad Asia Energy, has engaged PT PAL Indonesia for a significant contract. This agreement involves engineering, procurement, construction, and transport services for the conductor support frame (CSF) at WNEL’s natural gas field located in the West Natuna Sea, just off the coast of Indonesia. This partnership not only enhances the operational capabilities of WNEL but also underscores the confidence large firms have in local Indonesian businesses.

The Mako Gas Field: A Strategic Asset
The Mako gas field is designed with efficiency in mind, featuring six development wells that will be tied back to a leased mobile offshore production unit (MOPU). This configuration optimizes the extraction and management of gas resources. To facilitate the transfer of sales gas, an approximately 59-kilometer, 18-inch pipeline will carry the gas to the KF platform located in the adjacent Kakap Production Sharing Contract (PSC). From there, the gas will be channeled through the West Natuna Transportation System (WNTS) pipeline to meet the growing demands of the Indonesian domestic market.
Diving into the Details of the Contract
Under the terms of the binding contract, PT PAL Indonesia is tasked with a range of critical responsibilities. This includes detailed engineering to update the Front End Engineering Design (FEED), finalize the complete CSF design, and oversee the necessary transportation and installation engineering. PT PAL will also manage the procurement of all non-company supplied materials, as well as undertake the fabrication and assembly of the jacket and topsides structures. Once completed, these structures will be transported to the designated offshore location, guaranteeing a streamlined transition from construction to operation.
Statements from Leadership
Conrad Asia Energy’s Managing Director and CEO, Miltos Xynogalas, provided insights on the significance of this contract, stating, “This contract award marks another major milestone for the Company and reinforces our position as a trusted delivery partner in the offshore energy sector. Securing this EPCT contract for the CSF reflects the strength of our technical capability and our growing project execution track record.” His comments emphasize the company’s commitment to safe and efficient project delivery, alongside the strategic importance of natural gas for regional energy security.
Recent Developments in the Mako Gas Project
Earlier this month, WNEL took another step forward in its operational strategy by executing a binding contract with PT Pertamina Drilling Services Indonesia, alongside the PDSI-ADES consortium. This agreement involves securing a jack-up drilling rig to support the development of the Mako gas field. The Admarine 502, an independent-leg cantilever jack-up rig, will be responsible for drilling the six development wells, further solidifying the project’s infrastructure and operational readiness.
The Broader Implications for Indonesian Energy Security
This strategic contract and the ongoing developments in the Mako gas field highlight the robust landscape of Indonesia’s energy sector. As domestic and international companies collaborate, the focus remains on enhancing the country’s energy security and supporting a smooth transition toward cleaner energy sources. The involvement of local firms like PT PAL reinforces the growing trust in Indonesian capabilities within the global offshore energy market.
