ADNOC and SLB Launch AI Tool to Boost Efficiency on 120+ Rigs

Revolutionizing Drilling Operations: ADNOC and SLB Join Forces

The energy landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, with cutting-edge technology reshaping traditional practices. Leading this transformation are the United Arab Emirates-based Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the globally recognized technology provider, SLB. Together, they have implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) platform across a staggering fleet of more than 120 rigs to enhance drilling performance and minimize downtime.

    The Power of Artificial Intelligence

At the core of this initiative is the Real-Time Operations Center (RTOC), which harnesses AI to optimize operational efficiency. By allowing engineers to oversee up to three times more rigs, ADNOC has managed to significantly reduce downtime—avoiding potential delays of up to two days. This marks a crucial advancement in how drilling operations are monitored, analyzed, and managed both onshore and offshore.

    A Transformative Approach

Musabbeh Al Kaabi, CEO of ADNOC Upstream, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating, “The Real-Time Operations Center creates value across ADNOC’s drilling operations every minute by embedding AI into the heart of our drilling operations.” This commitment showcases ADNOC’s ambition to transition from merely recognizing AI’s potential to demonstrating its real-world impact.

This innovative RTOC platform synthesizes large volumes of drilling data and converts them into clear, actionable insights through automated dashboards. By replacing multiple traditional tools, it effectively reduces engineering workload by 30-40%. Engineers now can support two to three times more rigs while ensuring effective oversight, which is a game-changer for operational scalability.

    Enhanced Decision-Making Capabilities

Rakesh Jaggi, President of Digital at SLB, underscores the importance of real-time data analytics, stating that “DrillOps transforms real-time drilling data into operational intelligence.” By deploying this technology within ADNOC’s cloud environment, the framework not only supports AI-enabled workflows but also sets a scalable foundation for one of the industry’s largest rig fleets.

The ability to analyze real-time rig data adds another layer of operational intelligence. It allows teams to identify potential issues before they escalate, thereby reducing incident response times by up to 12 hours. This proactive approach not only enhances safety measures but also mitigates the risk of unnecessary rig downtime, keeping operations running smoothly.

    A Unified View of Operations

The RTOC amalgamates live rig data from various operations into a single, accessible environment. This consolidation provides business, asset, and drilling teams with a comprehensive real-time overview that significantly boosts coordination and speeds up decision-making processes. Tasks that once required an entire day of analysis can now be completed in a matter of minutes with the power of AI-driven insights.

    Supporting Two Key Operators

The AI platform specifically supports two of ADNOC’s key operational arms: ADNOC Onshore and ADNOC Offshore. By leveraging real-time operational data, these divisions can make quicker decisions while simultaneously improving performance and reducing operational risks across their extensive asset base.

ADNOC’s commitment to embedding intelligence into its core workflows accelerates its transition toward autonomous and optimized operations. By utilizing AI technology, the organization can ensure that it remains on the cutting edge of innovation while also reinforcing the safety and efficiency of its drilling operations.

    Cybersecurity and Data Sovereignty

Another significant benefit of the RTOC is its dedication to data security and sovereignty. By keeping critical operational data and workflows hosted within the UAE, ADNOC not only adheres to national regulations but also strengthens operational resilience and digital independence. This focus on maintaining control over sensitive information enhances the company’s commitment to security in an increasingly digital world.

    Strategic Partnerships for Future Growth

The deployment of the RTOC technology comes on the heels of ADNOC Offshore, TotalEnergies, Eni, and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) making a final investment decision (FID) for a development project in the UAE’s Umm Shaif and Nasr offshore concession. This strategic alignment highlights the collaborative efforts within the industry to leverage advanced technologies that not only bolster individual companies but also enhance the overall energy framework in the region.

Through these initiatives, ADNOC and SLB are paving the way for a future where technology and innovation drive the energy sector forward, demonstrating that the integration of AI is not just an aspiration but a tangible reality reshaping operational landscapes in real time.
