In a significant leap towards sustainable maritime operations, the 9,300-CEU M/V Arctic Tern recently completed China’s largest simultaneous car-handling and bunkering operation, refueling with 2,800 metric tonnes of green methanol. This landmark event was organized by EUKOR Car Carriers in collaboration with SIPG Energy and World Fuel Services, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of eco-friendly marine fuels.
The Fleet and the Fuel
The M/V Arctic Tern serves as the flagship of Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s Shaper Class fleet renewal program, which is set to introduce a total of 14 advanced vessels. This innovative car carrier underwent a ship-to-ship transfer at Haitong Terminal in Shanghai, facilitated by SIPG Energy’s M/V Hai Gang Zhi Yuan—the world’s largest methanol bunkering vessel. The endeavor showcases how the maritime industry is progressively integrating sustainable fuel alternatives into its operations.

Xavier Leroi, COO of Shipping Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen and CEO of EUKOR, underscored the importance of this operation, stating, “Completing Arctic Tern’s first green methanol bunkering shortly after delivery is a significant milestone.” This achievement illustrates how investments in next-generation vessel technology and fuel flexibility are being effectively translated into operational realities.
Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPs)
This noteworthy refueling operation was conducted under Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPs), enabling the simultaneous handling of ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) cargo while the fuel transfer took place. This method of dual operations exemplifies how alternative fuels can be integrated seamlessly into existing logistical frameworks, ensuring that vessel turnarounds remain efficient and timely.
Innovative Green Methanol Production
The green methanol used for the Arctic Tern’s refueling was produced from municipal solid waste in Shanghai, receiving ISCC-EU certification with a carbon intensity below 25 gCO₂e/MJ. This type of fuel not only reflects a significant shift toward lower carbon emissions but also highlights the potential of local waste management solutions in supporting sustainable shipping practices.
Designed for the Future
Constructed at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, the Arctic Tern is tailored for operations in the East Asia-to-Europe trade routes. EUKOR, jointly owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Hyundai Motor Group, views the implementation of ultra-low carbon fuels on European routes as a pathway to reduce compliance costs associated with upcoming regulations, such as the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime.
Navigating Regulatory Waters
The EU ETS operates as a financial penalty mechanism on emissions, while FuelEU Maritime sets technical mandates for the carbon intensity of fuels used in maritime operations. These regulations are pivotal components in the European Union’s commitment to decarbonizing the shipping industry, steering it towards more sustainable practices.
Shanghai’s Green Energy Hub
World Fuel Services coordinated the entire bunkering operation, with SIPG Energy acting as the fuel supplier. Zhang Da, General Manager of SIPG Energy, noted the expansion of ship-to-ship methanol bunkering from container vessels to pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) places Shanghai at the forefront of Asia’s green energy movement.

Named after the Arctic Tern, a seabird renowned for its long migratory pattern, this vessel is equipped with cutting-edge features designed to enhance efficiency and sustainability. It incorporates advanced hull air lubrication systems, solar panels, shore power connections, and battery packs, making it a model of modern maritime engineering. Notably, the Arctic Tern can be readily adapted to run on zero-emissions ammonia fuel as supply chains for this alternative fuel mature.
Responding to Demand for Electric Vehicles
As global demand for battery-electric vehicles rises, the Arctic Tern is also outfitted with a voluntary fire suppression system capable of isolating multiple fire zones within the cargo hold. This added safety feature underscores the vessel’s commitment to handling increasingly complex cargo, further solidifying its role in the evolving landscape of global shipping.
