Ongoing Investigation: 13 Dead and 66 Injured in QatarEnergy Gas Explosion and Fire

Tragic Incident at QatarEnergy’s LNG Facility

Qatar’s state-owned oil and gas giant, QatarEnergy, has announced the launch of an investigation following a tragic explosion and fire incident that occurred at its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export hub. This devastating event resulted in the loss of multiple lives and injuries to many others, highlighting the inherent risks associated with the oil and gas sector.

The explosion occurred during the start-up phase of operations at the QatarEnergy LNG-operated Ras Laffan Industrial City on the evening of Sunday, June 21, 2026. Specifically, the incident took place at the Barzan local gas supply facility. Emergency response teams swiftly mobilized to contain the fire, which fortunately was brought under control without further escalation.

In a somber update delivered the following day, QatarEnergy confirmed that 13 workers tragically lost their lives, with an additional 66 others sustaining injuries, none of which are believed to be life-threatening. The affected individuals represented a diverse workforce, reflecting the multinational nature of Qatar’s labor market. The deceased included nationals from India and Pakistan, while the injured hailed from a range of countries including Qatari, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, Nigerian, and Nepalese backgrounds.

In light of the event, QatarEnergy expressed its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who perished. The company reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected individuals and their families during this difficult time.

“QatarEnergy would like to emphasize that this was an operational accident and not sabotage or hostile in nature,” the firm clarified, underlining the importance of transparency in addressing the incident. The Barzan production facility had been offline since December 2025 due to essential maintenance, with operations only recently resumed two days prior to the explosion.

QatarEnergy’s emergency response team, aided by Qatar’s Civil Defense, effectively extinguished the fire on site. Investigations are currently underway to assess the magnitude of damage inflicted on Barzan and its neighboring facilities. The Barzan project processes sour gas from offshore wells in the North field, delivering resources to the onshore gas plant at Ras Laffan.

Fortunately, QatarEnergy has assured that the wider LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port, and associated logistics operations remain unharmed in the aftermath of this incident. As the investigation proceeds, the company remains focused on ensuring operational safety in all its ventures.

In a heartfelt gesture, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, personally visited the Embassy of India in Doha to offer condolences for the loss of Indian nationals. His message echoed shared sentiments of sorrow, highlighting that “the loss of innocent lives is a tragedy that touches all of us.” Al-Kaabi also conveyed similar condolences to the Embassy of Pakistan, reflecting the diplomatic sensitivity surrounding this incident.

In recent months, the geopolitics of the region have significantly impacted QatarEnergy’s operations. Following military actions involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran, escalations in tensions have prompted QatarEnergy to halt LNG production at various assets and declare force majeure to its LNG buyers. This backdrop complicates the energy landscape, underscoring the interconnectedness of geopolitical events and their ripple effects on global energy supply.

Additionally, Iran’s retaliatory actions, including missile strikes targeting oil and gas facilities across the Gulf region, including Ras Laffan, have raised alarms about safety and security in vital energy hubs. As QatarEnergy navigates these challenges, the emphasis remains on ensuring the safety of its workers and the integrity of its operations.
