    Texas Gulf Coast LNG Project with Carbon Capture Begins Permitting Phase for 19.2 MTPA Capacity

    The Texas Gulf Coast is set to play a crucial role in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry with a groundbreaking export project taking significant strides in its regulatory approval process. Coastal Bend LNG has submitted a request to the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to commence the pre-filing review for its proposed export terminal, marking a pivotal step towards development.

    Coastal Bend LNG aims to leverage advanced technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing the LNG export capacity from Texas. Last year, the company chose ConocoPhillips’ Optimized Cascade process (COP OCP) technology to help meet its sustainability goals. With the formal permitting process now underway, the project is gaining momentum at a crucial time for energy markets around the globe.

    Keith Shoemaker, Chief Commercial Officer of Coastal Bend LNG, highlighted the project’s strategic advantages, saying, “Our location on the Texas Gulf Coast superimposes three geographic advantages not replicated elsewhere: direct connectivity to Texas’s abundant natural gas supplies, proximity to some of the world’s most favorable geology for carbon sequestration, and the flexibility to serve both Asian and European markets with an emissions profile that meets the CLEAN initiative’s transparency expectations and supports buyers’ compliance with the EU Methane Regulation.”

    This integral project is expected to house four liquefaction trains, each with a capacity of 4.8 million tons per annum (mtpa), totaling a significant 19.2 mtpa. Accompanying infrastructure will include storage and vessel loading facilities, essential for smooth operations and efficient export processes.

    Coastal Bend LNG has ambitious plans to incorporate integrated carbon capture capabilities, allowing the facility to offer contracted transport and geological sequestration of carbon dioxide. This commitment not only aligns with regulatory frameworks but also responds to the increasing emphasis on ecological sustainability in the energy sector.

    The momentum surrounding the project is palpable, particularly following the selection of leading companies KBR and Técnicas Reunidas for front-end engineering design (FEED) and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) duties. This selection aligns with Coastal Bend LNG’s commitment to execute a disciplined and well-structured approach to the project.
