Italian startup Sizable Energy has taken a significant step in the renewable energy sector by beginning tests of a groundbreaking offshore energy storage technology. Situated at the Natural Ocean Engineering Laboratory (NOEL) off the stunning coastline of Calabria, this innovative project aims to harness the power generated by offshore wind farms and other renewable sources.
Overview of the Technology
The centerpiece of Sizable Energy’s innovation is a floating reservoir, which was installed in April at the University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria’s offshore test site. Measuring an impressive 50 meters in diameter, this reservoir operates on principles akin to traditional pumped hydro plants. However, what sets it apart is its use of hydrostatic pressure and gravity, making it ideally suited for offshore applications.
How It Works
The operational mechanics of the floating reservoir involve storing excess renewable electricity. During periods of low electricity demand, a dense brine solution is pumped into the floating reservoir. When electricity demand spikes, this stored energy is released to a second reservoir located on the seabed. The transition triggers turbines that generate electricity, effectively balancing the supply and demand of energy resources.
This innovative method is positioned as a viable alternative to conventional Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), highlighting Sizable Energy’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions for energy storage.
Engineering and Deployment
On July 29, GEODIS, a France-based global logistics provider, played a crucial role in the deployment of the offshore energy storage tank. Their responsibilities encompassed engineering the lifting, towing, and installation operations, which required meticulous planning and execution.
The offshore reservoir itself is no small feat, weighing approximately 11 tons. GEODIS utilized a robust 350-ton crane with an outreach of around 50 meters to maneuver and launch the structure into its testing environment, all while adhering to strict environmental and site conditions.
