    Under the newly signed agreement, Japan will provide the foundational design and core technological aspects necessary for the UNICORN system. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), India’s defense manufacturing giant, has been entrusted with the task of producing these advanced masts on Indian soil, leveraging Japanese expertise.

    In line with India’s ambitious “Make in India” initiative, the project emphasizes localization and system integration, enabling India to seamlessly weave its own sensors and antennas into the UNICORN mast before deploying them aboard its naval vessels.

This project for a naval radio antenna will open a new chapter in our defense technology partnership.”

    The sentiment was echoed by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which confirmed that the agreement encompasses both the development and licensed manufacturing of the UNICORN mast system for India’s naval fleet.

    Technical Composition

    Also referred to as the NORA-50 integrated mast, the UNICORN was collaboratively developed by NEC Corporation alongside Sampa Kogyo K.K. and The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. The mast is designed to unite a multitude of different communication and surveillance systems into a singular, cohesive unit positioned on a ship.

    • Electronic Support Measures (ESM) Antennas: Essential for monitoring and responding to electronic threats.

    • UHF Transmit and Receive Antennas: Support long-range communications.
    • Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Systems: Enhance operational safety and efficiency.
    • VHF/UHF Communication Antennas: Enable versatile communication options.
    • Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) System: Assists naval aviation and navigation.
    • Lightning Conductor: Protects vital equipment from environmental hazards.

    Advantages Over Traditional Systems

    One of the most significant advantages of the UNICORN mast is its ability to reduce the amount of external antennas required on naval vessels. This not only streamlines maintenance but also decreases the radar cross-section of warships, making them harder to detect. Furthermore, the design minimizes electromagnetic interference and shields critical components from the harsh marine environment.

    First installed on Japan’s Mogami-class frigates in 2019, the UNICORN system went through rigorous development phases between 2015 and 2016, entering serial production in 2018.

    Future Cooperation and Economic Dialogue

    Beyond the defense pact, the summit between India and Japan also prompted discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in economic security, supply chain resilience, clean energy, and the biotechnology sector. Both nations made commitments to update the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) originally established in 2011.

    Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri noted that both parties deliberated on whether an update was necessary in light of global trade dynamics. India has requested a reevaluation of non-tariff barriers imposed by Japan, particularly related to its sanitary and phytosanitary standards, which have created challenges for Indian exports.

    Roadmap for Economic Security

    The summit concluded with a Joint Roadmap focused on Economic Security, emphasizing collaboration across emerging technologies, including semiconductors and quantum technologies.
