    Maximizing Recovery in the Caspian Sea: BP and SOCAR’s Joint Innovations

    UK-headquartered energy giant BP has collaborated with the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) to unleash cutting-edge innovations aimed at boosting oil recovery in the Caspian Sea. Their partnership centers around the Azeri–Chirag–Gunashli (ACG) field, an extensive oilfield renowned for its potential yet faced with the challenges of mature asset management.

    The challenge of managing mature oilfields often calls for a fusion of advanced technologies and robust partnerships. BP and SOCAR have embraced this model, deploying a series of innovative solutions designed to enhance oil recovery. Recently, they kicked off non-associated gas production operations in the ACG field, demonstrating that effective collaboration among multiple stakeholders—including SOCAR, MOL, Inpex, ExxonMobil, TPAO, and ONGC Videsh—can yield substantial results.

    Breakthroughs with Horizontal Open Pipe Systems

    One of the centerpieces of this innovative thrust is the application of advanced drilling technologies. Notably, a 1.1-kilometer-long horizontal open pipe was successfully employed in the B18W well, drilled from the Central Azeri platform. This method exemplified how the integration of technology can streamline operations, marking a significant leap forward in tapping the potential of the ACG field.

    Gio Cristofoli, BP’s Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, highlighted how MLT not only enhances reservoir access but also offers a more efficient way to optimize existing infrastructure. With the ACG field transitioning into a more intricate and matured phase, MLT is poised to become a cornerstone of BP’s long-term strategy for recovery.

    Delivering the First Multilateral Well

    The first MLT well, designated C44, was successfully drilled from the West Azeri platform, setting a new benchmark as the first multilateral well in the Caspian Sea. This achievement is monumental, as it showcases both the feasibility and the tangible value of using MLT technology in the field’s unique reservoir environment.

    Russell Morrice, BP’s VP Wells AGT, emphasized that the C44 well was delivered with a commendable safety record, completing the project 30 days ahead of schedule.     Strategic Roadmap for Future Deployments

    Looking ahead, BP has plotted a strategic roadmap for deploying MLT across the ACG field. A broader campaign is set to commence with the aim of drilling three additional MLT wells by 2026, including C44 and D41.
