Exmar’s Strategic Leap into the LNG Bunkering Market
In a significant advancement for the maritime sector, Belgian shipping company Exmar has recently taken delivery of the Simaisa, a state-of-the-art liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier (LNGC). This 146,000-cubic-meter (cbm) vessel is set to undergo transformative upgrades, allowing it to operate as a floating transshipment unit (FTU) specifically dedicated to the burgeoning LNG bunkering market. This move reflects Exmar’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the shipping industry.
The delivery of the Simaisa marks the beginning of an initial seven-year charter contract, highlighting the vessel’s strategic importance in Exmar’s operational framework. The planned modifications will soon see the Simaisa enter dry-dock for enhancements that will equip it to serve as a functional FTU. Exmar’s CEO, Carl-Antoine Saverys, underscored the importance of this initiative, stating: “Exmar is gladly assisting its client in further paving the way to unlock LNG as a fuel for the shipping industry. The FTU is a smart solution with which our client can bring down the costs of LNG-related logistics.” This sentiment reflects Exmar’s long-standing expertise in LNG, a field in which the company has been active for nearly five decades.
In tandem with the upgrades to Simaisa, Exmar is actively investigating various decarbonization pathways for the shipping industry. This includes the recent delivery of their first dual-fuel ammonia midsize gas carriers (MGCs), highlighting their proactive approach to sustainability and emissions reduction in maritime transport.
