Allseas’ Solitaire, one of the world’s largest pipelay vessels, is back at sea after an extensive ten-month renewal and upgrade program designed to enhance its installation capabilities and production efficiency.
Originally announced last year, the 397-meter vessel has been operational since 1998 and was scheduled for a significant modernization. This comprehensive upgrade involved enhancements to critical components such as pipe handling, tracking, welding, inspection systems, and various structural elements, ensuring its relevance in a rapidly evolving industry.
According to Allseas, the renewal program, taking place in Rotterdam, has now entered its final phase. This ambitious upgrade has focused on transforming nearly every major system on the vessel. Notable improvements include modernization of propulsion, power generation, and automation systems, alongside the incorporation of hybrid power capabilities. Most impressively, the double joint factory (DJF), integral to pipelay operations for over 25 years, has been upgraded to bolster performance and efficiency.
The upgrades breathe new life into the original DJF, which produced its last double joint in September 2025. This facility has an impressive track record, generating over 13,000 kilometers of pipeline, equating to more than half a million double joints throughout its operational history.
Allseas commented, “This was more than a refit. The program represents a strategic reinvestment in a vessel that has helped define offshore pipelay for nearly three decades. The upgraded DJF lays the foundation for a more automated, data-driven, and future-ready pipelay process, while extensive renewal work throughout the vessel strengthens reliability, efficiency, and performance for the years ahead.”
Post-renovation, Solitaire is set to undergo sea trials before transitioning back into commercial operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Here, it will support an ultra-deepwater pipeline project before embarking on a two-year global campaign that will span regions such as West Africa, Taiwan, and Australia, ultimately delivering over 1,250 kilometers of pipeline.
