In an evolving maritime landscape, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has embarked on a significant initiative to bolster its global presence and support tailored to Member States. With the appointment of seven Regional Coordinators, the IMO aims to enhance its outreach, ensuring that its technical support closely aligns with the specific needs and challenges faced by different regions.
The Mission of Regional Presence Offices
Tailored Support for Diverse Needs
The IMO’s Regional Presence Offices (RPOs) are designed to provide focused technical support across the globe, particularly to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This strategic initiative acknowledges that regional requirements often differ, necessitating customized assistance that reflects local priorities. With this approach, the IMO endeavors to bridge the gap between global maritime policies and regional realities, fostering more efficient and effective maritime governance.
Key Functions and Goals
At the core of the newly established structure, seven appointed Regional Coordinators will be responsible for overseeing IMO activities across eleven thematic areas. These include critical issues such as maritime safety, security, environmental sustainability, and compliance with international regulations. IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez underlined the importance of these coordinators, stating they will act as the “face of IMO” in their respective regions, thereby enhancing the organization’s responsiveness to maritime challenges.
Collaborative Exchange and Capacity Building
From June 15 to 16, the inaugural gathering of the Regional Coordinators took place in London. This meeting served as a platform for exchanging experiences and bolstering their network. By discussing the implementation of thematic programs under the IMO’s Technical Cooperation Programme for 2026–2027, they aimed to enhance regional engagement and capacity building.
Focus Areas of Discussion
The workshop highlighted diverse critical areas:
- Maritime Safety: Ensuring safe navigation and operational practices.
- Security: Addressing threats in maritime environments.
- Climate Action: Promoting sustainable maritime practices.
- Law and Governance: Strengthening legal frameworks for maritime operations.
- Gender Equality: Fostering inclusivity within maritime industries.
- Education and Training: Facilitating learning opportunities for stakeholders.
By tapping into these focus areas, the IMO seeks not just to implement policies but also to transform them into actionable strategies at the regional level.

The team of Regional Coordinators brings a wealth of expertise from various maritime sectors, reflecting a diverse array of backgrounds and experiences tailored to address the unique challenges across their regions.
