SBM Offshore Partners with Nortrans for Long-Term Flotel Project in Angola

Singapore’s Offshore and Shipping Company Nortrans Offshore Secures Flotel Assignment Off Angola

In a significant move for both Nortrans Offshore and the offshore industry, Singapore’s own Nortrans Offshore has been awarded a flotel assignment at Block 15, located off the coast of Angola. The collaboration involves Netherlands-based SBM Offshore, a respected leader in the design, construction, installation, and operation of offshore floating facilities. This partnership hints at a robust future for offshore operations in this vital region.

The spotlight shines on Nortrans Offshore’s 500-POB MSU DP3 Nor Spirit, which has been awarded a lucrative two-year contract. This vessel will assist SBM Offshore in conducting vital offshore operations at Block 15. The assignment includes providing accommodation and support services as part of ongoing life-extension activities for both the FPSO Saxi and the FPSO Mondo platforms. Such operations are critical to extending the lifecycle of these floating production, storage, and offloading facilities, which play a significant role in Angola’s energy supply.

Nortrans Offshore emphasized the capabilities of the Nor Spirit, stating, “With her proven DP3 capabilities, continuous gangway connection functionality, and large accommodation capacity, Nor Spirit is well-positioned to support safe and efficient offshore operations throughout the project.” This statement underlines the vessel’s qualifications to handle the demanding offshore conditions expected in the region, assuring both safety and efficiency.

The award marks another milestone for Nortrans as it reinforces its position in the offshore accommodation market. The company expressed gratitude to SBM Offshore, ExxonMobil (the operator at Block 15), and all stakeholders involved in this project for their continued trust and confidence in their teams and assets.

Block 15 is not just significant due to this partnership; it is also notable for its operational structure. It is jointly operated by ExxonMobil, alongside Azule Energy, Equinor, and Sonangol. The consortium is strategically positioned in the region, securing ownership and operational rights until 2032 for the FPSOs Mondo and Saxi Batuque, thus ensuring a stable operational footprint in the years ahead.

Nortrans’ new flotel assignment follows closely on the heels of another development in Block 15. Just two months prior, ExxonMobil commissioned Subsea Integration Alliance (SIA) to manage the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) scope of work for the Redevelopment 2.0 Likembe oil project. This further illustrates the active engagement and investments being made in Angola’s offshore sector, highlighting the growing demand for specialized services.

As the offshore energy landscape continues to evolve, both Nortrans Offshore and SBM Offshore are taking proactive steps to secure their roles in a competitive market. Their commitment to operational excellence and strategic collaborations will likely play pivotal roles in future offshore projects, not only in Angola but also in other lucrative regions.

With this partnership, the stage is set for an exciting future in offshore operations at Block 15, marking a period of growth and innovation in the energy sector.
