Tragic Collision: Fishing Boat Sinks Off Vietnam’s Coast
On July 6, a tragic maritime accident unfolded off Vietnam’s south-central coast when a fishing boat collided with a cargo ship, resulting in the sinking of the smaller vessel and the loss of one life. The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in the fishing and shipping industries, especially in busy coastal waters.
The Incident Overview
The collision occurred approximately 10 nautical miles (about 18.5 km) southeast of Phu Hai Port in Lam Dong Province. The fishing vessel, identified as BTh 98379 TS, was engaged in a typical fishing expedition when it collided with the cargo ship Viet Thuan 11-07. This sudden clash caused the 17.1-meter fishing boat to pitch into the water, marking a critical moment for the crew on board.
The Crew and Their Fate
At the time of the accident, the BTh 98379 TS was carrying 17 crew members. Despite the potentially dire circumstances, nearby fishing boats sprang into action, quickly rescuing all the crew from the water. However, despite these efforts, one fisherman tragically succumbed to his injuries later on.
The vessel was owned and captained by Phan Van Chi, a 54-year-old from Phu Thuy Ward in Lam Dong Province, who had set sail that morning around 7 a.m. for what was intended to be a routine fishing trip.
The Rescue Operation
The immediate response to the incident was commendable. Multiple nearby fishing vessels participated in the rescue efforts. All 17 crew members were pulled from the water and transported to safety. Among them, 15 survivors were reported to be in stable condition, while the body of the deceased crew member was also recovered.
After the rescue, Captain Phan Van Chi remained at the site, playing a crucial role in coordinating efforts and providing information to authorities. The survivors and the victim were expected to arrive back at Phu Hai Port by around 2 p.m., where officials were prepared to carry out necessary procedures, including an investigation into the accident.
Investigative Actions
In the wake of the incident, the cargo ship Viet Thuan 11-07 proceeded to the anchorage outside Phan Thiet Port, where it would cooperate with authorities in the ongoing investigation into the collision. The Thanh Hai Border Guard Station acted promptly, alerting nearby vessels immediately after receiving reports of the accident, which undoubtedly accelerated the rescue operation.
Community Support and Response
Local authorities wasted no time in visiting the families affected by the tragedy. They assessed the situation to provide necessary support to those grieving the loss of the fisherman. While the identity of the deceased has yet to be disclosed, the community’s response underscores the unity and compassion often found in tight-knit fishing communities.
Safety Concerns in Maritime Operations
This incident serves as a haunting reminder of the dangers faced by fishermen and maritime operators. With busy shipping lanes and increasing maritime traffic, ensuring safety standards remains a priority. Investigators are currently probing the causes of the collision, aiming to uncover any contributing factors and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As authorities continue to piece together the events of that fateful day, the hope is that insights gained will lead to improved safety measures for all those who venture into these often perilous waters.
