This 45-footer sailing yacht is a carefully engineered wood-composite cruising yacht that promises exceptional sailing capabilities. Carbon and foam core layups are standard, with meticulous attention given to matching laminate wood species with performance requirements.

The owner, an experienced sailor, clearly articulated a vision: “I want a yacht that is notable in this size range. It should integrate classical elements while also conveying speed and agile movement through water, akin to a Ferrari on land. Ease of sailing, whether short-handed or single-handed, is paramount, necessitating simplicity and ergonomics. Although intended primarily for day-sailing, the yacht must feature beautifully appointed accommodations for two couples during weekend cruising.”

To bring this vision to life, a talented team of professionals is essential. Leading the design efforts is Bill Tripp and his team at Tripp Design Naval Architecture, based in Norwalk, CT. Known for their innovative approaches, Tripp and his team are seasoned experts in adapting large yacht concepts into smaller, yet remarkably functional, designs.

Selecting a boatbuilder well-versed in complex concepts and skilled craftsmanship is crucial. Sam Temple of Rockport Marine in Rockport, ME, has stepped up to the challenge, bringing extensive experience and a collaborative spirit to the project. Finally, overseeing the project is Peter Wilson of MCM Newport, RI, who ensures that the owners’ vision remains intact throughout the build process.

Bill Tripp commented on the unique collaboration, stating, “It’s a pleasure to work with an owner who has clear ideas. What makes this project exceptional is the owner’s willingness to challenge our design preconceptions, allowing us to infuse the innovative essence of larger yachts into the tighter confines of a 45-footer. This collaboration is a true joy, enabling us to create a boat that we, too, would love to sail.”

The crew at Rockport Marine shares this sentiment. Sam Temple noted, “We eagerly accepted the chance to collaborate with Tripp Design and Peter Wilson. The technical aspects and modern styling have made this experience incredibly satisfying; our capabilities align perfectly with the project’s needs.”

Peter Wilson reflects on his long-standing relationship with the owner, having previously managed a yacht project for him and sailed together in several prestigious races like the Marblehead-Halifax and Newport-Bermuda races. Wilson expressed excitement when the owner approached him for this new venture: “Our prior relationship, combined with the distinguished expertise of Tripp Design and Rockport Marine, laid a solid foundation for success. I’ve experienced the advantages of cold-moulded yachts, both inshore and offshore, and this construction method undoubtedly produces a boat that is quiet, stable, and comfortable.”

Status Update: All parties involved anticipate commencing sailing trials in early 2021.
