Chinese cable manufacturer Far East Cable has embarked on an ambitious project, marking a significant milestone in offshore operations. The company has begun construction on a new large-capacity multipurpose cable-laying vessel (CLV) at ZPMC’s shipyard in Shanghai. This state-of-the-art vessel is designed to support a variety of critical projects, including offshore wind farms, subsea interconnectors, and telecommunication cable installations.
The vessel is designed with cutting-edge technology and features that ensure optimum performance in the challenging marine environment. According to ZPMC and Far East Cable, the CLV spans an impressive 148 meters in length and 38 meters in beam, providing ample space to accommodate up to 100 personnel. This not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures the safety and comfort of the crew during extensive offshore missions.
One standout feature of the new CLV is its DP2 dynamic positioning system, which allows for precise maneuvering and positioning in various marine conditions. This system is complemented by a concentric dual-outlet rotating cable carousel, which significantly streamlines the laying and retrieval of cables. With a maximum operating water depth of 150 meters, this vessel will rank among the largest cable-carrying ships in the Chinese fleet, expanding the capabilities of local cable installation efforts.
Once completed, the vessel’s operational scope will be wide-ranging. It will be instrumental in the installation of subsea cables for offshore wind farms, create inter-island and cross-sea power connections, and engage in cable repair operations. Beyond that, it will support subsea umbilical installations, thereby playing a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing offshore energy infrastructures.
Moreover, this CLV is designed to facilitate the installation and repair of long-distance submarine fiber-optic cables. This dual capability means that it will not only bolster efforts in the offshore renewable energy sector but also significantly enhance subsea telecommunications, a sector that is increasingly vital in our interconnected world. Far East Cable is a wholly-owned subsidiary within the esteemed Far East Holding Group, specifically under Far East Smart Energy. With a strong reputation in the industry, the company has already been contracted for several high-profile offshore wind projects. Notably, it played a pivotal role in the China Three Gorges’ (CTG) 800 MW Jiangsu Dafeng project, providing essential 66 kV high-voltage torsion-resistant flexible cables and wire harnesses.
The company has also secured the bid for China’s inaugural large-scale deep-sea floating wind project, the 1 GW Hainan Wanning. For this project, Far East Cable is set to deliver a comprehensive range of products, including vital 66 kV dynamic subsea cables and associated construction services, further solidifying its position as a leader in the offshore energy landscape.
