Technip Energies and Mozambique’s Coral Norte FLNG Project: A Dive Into the Future of LNG
French-based engineering player Technip Energies is making headlines with its recent announcements regarding the Coral Norte floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility situated off the coast of Mozambique. Collaborating with key partners, including JGC and Samsung Heavy Industries, Technip has been awarded an engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) contract by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), a joint venture led by Eni. This contract represents a significant revenue milestone for Technip, totaling over €1 billion.
The Strategic Importance of Coral Norte
The Coral Norte project is designed to produce an impressive 3.6 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, effectively doubling the Coral LNG hub’s total capacity to 7 mtpa. The strategic positioning of this FLNG facility not only underscores Mozambique’s role in the evolving landscape of global energy but also positions the country among Africa’s top three LNG producers.
The project is backed by a consortium that includes major players like China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH), XRG, and Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS). Following final investment decisions (FID) made in October 2025, the development has received a green light, paving the way for what promises to be a transformative endeavor in the region’s energy sector.
Engineering Synergy and Replication Strategy
What sets the Coral Norte project apart is its design strategy, which is essentially an enhanced replica of the Coral Sul, the first FLNG development initiated in Mozambique’s Area 4 offshore gas block. This design replication allows developers to leverage lessons learned from Coral Sul, integrating vital insights into the execution and optimization of Coral Norte. By standardizing the project delivery model, Technip Energies and its partners aim to create a de-risked approach that enables predictability and enhanced execution at every project stage.
This engineering synergy not only assures efficiency but also capitalizes on the common feed gas composition and deepwater location, allowing for streamlined construction and operational standards.
A Firm Step Towards Global Energy Security
Arnaud Pieton, the CEO of Technip Energies, has expressed confidence in the project, highlighting its potential to significantly contribute to energy security and diversification. He encapsulated this by stating that the Coral Norte project not only reflects the faith Eni and its partners have in their FLNG execution capabilities but also adheres to the principles of “design one, build many.” This framework not only accelerates project timelines but ensures the rapid deployment of necessary LNG capacities.
With Mozambique emerging as a significant player on the global LNG stage, this project is a critical part of the larger puzzle. It showcases how investments and partnerships in natural gas can meet rising energy demands while contributing to regional economic growth.
Recent Wins and Future Prospects
The momentum for Technip Energies does not end with Coral Norte. This announcement follows closely on the heels of the company securing full notice to proceed (FNTP) with an EPC contract for Commonwealth LNG, which is also set to represent over €1 billion in revenue. Such ongoing commitments and expansions highlight Technip Energies’ robust role in shaping the future of LNG projects not just in Mozambique, but across the globe.
As the energy landscape continues to evolve, Technip Energies is well-positioned to harness the potential of emerging markets like Mozambique, ensuring efficient energy production while contributing to the broader goal of sustainable energy practices.
