A Perspective on the Dutch Golden Age
Located in the charming Herenmarkt, this apartment occupies three floors of a former 17th-century merchant’s house. Studio Elèn Letort drew inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age, infusing the interiors with warmth and depth. The intention was clear: create a home that is expressive and characterful while ensuring it remains calm and versatile—ideal for both relaxation and showcasing an art collection.
Harmonizing With History
One of the main advantages of this property was its good condition. Instead of extensive structural changes, the focus rested on aesthetic upgrades and spatial reconfigurations. Studio Elèn Letort reimagined the upper floor, ensuring a clearer separation between the main bedroom and bathroom, providing both functionality and privacy.
“A significant goal was to create spaces that felt light yet grounded,” stated founder Elèn Letort. This philosophy steered the choice of materials and design elements throughout the home.
Material Palette: Rich Woods and Natural Accents
Throughout the maisonette, a meticulous selection of rich wood tones and natural materials reigns supreme. The team introduced subtle color accents that create a heartwarming atmosphere in every room. This thoughtful palette breathes life into the spaces without overwhelming them.
In the kitchen, walnut cabinetry harmonizes with sleek steel worktops, striking a delicate balance between modernist and utilitarian aesthetics. The fluted glass cabinet fronts light the room while providing functional storage.

Letort’s vision sought to blend everyday comfort with artistic expression. The dining area near the kitchen is graced by a striking artwork from Claire Witteveen, showcasing deep burgundy tones that seamlessly relate to the color palette of the guest bathroom, featuring a luxurious marble sink.
The master bedroom bathroom stands out with a refreshing lightness, highlighted by a sculptural green stone vanity. Complemented by warm woods and cream-colored tiles, this space embodies a serene retreat.
Soft Lighting and Well-Arranged Furniture
The living room radiates a calm aura thanks to soft daylight filtering through linen curtains, casting gentle light on an art deco sofa and carefully curated artworks. Each piece in the room is chosen with intention, from the owners’ collections to new additions sourced from Les Objets Amsterdam. The incorporation of modern design elements, such as the Nello bar stools by Serax and the Arête pendant lamp by Asca Studio, enhances the sophisticated yet relaxed ambiance of the home.
