Reviving a US-Flagged Tanker: ABS Partners with HD Hyundai Heavy

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) are set to revolutionize the tanker market with their recent collaboration on a new U.S.-flagged oil and chemical tanker. This partnership aims to bolster the fleet of U.S.-flagged vessels, responding to an increasing demand driven by national shipbuilding policies.

The joint development agreement signed by ABS and HD HHI focuses on designing a 50,000 DWT tanker specifically for U.S. operations. With extensive experience in constructing tankers of this size, HD HHI is well-equipped to meet the unique needs of the U.S. market.

Dongjin Lee, Executive Vice President of HD HHI, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “We are working closely with ABS to address specific U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) technical requirements as we anticipate a growing demand for U.S.-flagged vessels.” He notes that this proactive approach will strengthen HD HHI’s competitive edge in the U.S. market, ensuring compliance and safety while offering high-value solutions for operators.

As part of their collaboration, ABS will conduct a thorough review of HD HHI’s designs to align them with both ABS rules and USCG standards. This partnership underscores the importance of rigorous safety and regulatory compliance in the maritime sector, especially for newly built vessels.

Patrick Ryan, ABS’ Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, highlighted the organization’s long-standing role in the industry: “From the first 100,000 DWT tanker to today’s most advanced designs, ABS has consistently provided the guidance that owners and operators need to achieve their goals.” His remarks underline ABS’s ongoing commitment to safety and innovation in maritime solutions.

The timing of this partnership is particularly noteworthy as it follows ABS’s recent endorsement of cutting-edge technology from SBM Offshore, developed in collaboration with Shell. This highlights the classification society’s role not just in compliance but also in fostering innovation within the maritime sector.
