    Poland’s First Offshore Wind Farm Approaches Completion with 50 Turbines Installed

    With a vision for a greener future, the Baltic Power offshore wind farm is shaping up to become a milestone in Poland’s energy transition. This innovative project is a partnership between ORLEN Group and Northland Power, signifying a major step forward for renewable energy in the region.

    Project Status and Progress

    Recently, it was announced that 50 out of the 76 planned turbines for the Baltic Power offshore wind farm have been installed. This marks the final phase of construction for Poland’s most advanced offshore wind project. Current activities involve critical infrastructure testing, with preparations ramping up to integrate the wind farm into the national grid.

    The Baltic Power project is set to generate approximately 4 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually, equating to about 3% of Poland’s existing power demand. Ireneusz Fąfara, President of the ORLEN Management Board, emphasized the project’s significance by stating, “The energy of the future is being built today.”

    Turbine Specifications and Technology

    The wind farm will feature cutting-edge Vestas 15 MW turbines, among the largest and most efficient available today. Each turbine will stand over 250 metres tall, with rotor blades sweeping an area larger than six football fields. This technology represents a remarkable leap in offshore wind capabilities, enabling higher energy generation within smaller areas.

    A notable aspect of this project is the commitment to sustainability. Approximately 15% of the steel used in the turbines is sourced from recycled materials, produced in steel furnaces powered by renewable energy. This initiative can reduce the lifecycle carbon footprint of each turbine by up to 10%.

    Infrastructure and Integration

    The project site, located around 23 kilometres off the Polish coast near Choczewo and Łeba, has seen extensive groundwork. All 78 foundations and transition pieces are complete, along with offshore substations and onshore grid connection infrastructure, ready for commissioning.

    As installation work continues, initial power export tests are also being carried out to ensure smooth integration with Poland’s national power system. Maciej Stryjecki, President of the Baltic Power Management Board, highlighted the collaborative effort necessary during this demanding phase, stating, “This is one of the most demanding phases of the entire project, requiring close cooperation between project teams, contractors, and the transmission system operator.”
