Recently, Petronas LNG has inked a new LNG sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with Shizuoka Gas. This agreement is set to provide approximately 0.84 million metric tonnes (mt) of LNG over seven years, starting in 2032. This strategic alliance affords further supply flexibility and reliability, catering to the evolving energy needs of Shizuoka Gas amidst fluctuating global market conditions.

The deal’s signing ceremony, held in Kuala Lumpur, was commemorated by key figures: Datuk Adif Zulkifli, the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Petronas’ Gas and Maritime Business, and Yoshitake Matsumoto, the Representative Director and President of Shizuoka Gas. This event was more than just a celebration of a transaction; it marked 30 years since Petronas first delivered LNG to Shizuoka Gas, reflecting a partnership that has blossomed alongside Japan’s burgeoning LNG market and the evolving demands of its energy consumers.

As they look to the future, both companies seek to transcend the traditional seller-buyer dynamic. There’s a mutual interest in exploring collaborative opportunities focused on decarbonization across the LNG value chain. This proactive approach underscores their shared vision for a sustainable energy future.

Zulkifli expressed, “This agreement represents not merely a commercial milestone, but a culmination of 30 years of mutual trust, shared growth and a partnership that has transformed alongside the changing energy landscape. We cherish the strong relationship we have built with Shizuoka Gas and eagerly anticipate deepening our collaboration in the future.”

In his remarks, he added, “As our customers’ needs become increasingly dynamic, PETRONAS remains dedicated to delivering reliable and flexible LNG solutions through our global portfolio, supporting long-term energy security while advancing a pragmatic and responsible energy transition.”

This latest agreement highlights the escalating demand for flexible LNG supply solutions as clients pursue greater resilience and energy security in an ever-shifting global energy environment. Petronas is actively expanding its oil and gas portfolio, evidenced by their recent successes, including two significant discoveries and ongoing appraisal activities in Block 52 offshore Suriname.
