Canon Mews: A Modern Approach to Residential Design in Edinburgh
Architecture studio Pend has recently completed a stunning pair of light-filled mews homes in the historic Canonmills neighborhood of Edinburgh, Scotland. Set on a compact brownfield site, these residences are a bold reinterpretation of traditional mews typologies, showcasing a keen understanding of modern living.
A Collaborative Vision
The project was a collaboration between Pend and local contractor Gloss Projects, aiming to demonstrate that effective urban design can maximize the potential of modest plots. This venture marked Pend’s debut development, allowing them to explore the design and construction process in unprecedented ways.
Pend’s director, Jamie Anderson, expressed that taking on the dual roles of architect and developer provided a unique opportunity to unlock the potential of constrained urban spaces. “Canon Mews presented a new opportunity for us as a practice,” he noted, signifying the studio’s innovative approach to urban architecture.
Design and Layout
The two-storey homes each have areas of 111 and 135 square meters, featuring three double bedrooms and integrated garages. They are strategically organized around private courtyards designed to introduce natural light while framing captivating external views. This spatial arrangement invites an abundance of daylight into the homes, fulfilling one of the core objectives of the design.
With full-height sliding doors leading to secluded outdoor areas, the ground-floor entrances open to inviting lounges. Staircases gracefully lead up to open kitchen and dining areas that extend into adjoining terraces, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. Bedrooms at the rear offer tranquil views of the courtyards, while those at the front feature dormer windows that capture glimpses of the sky.
Material Choices and Aesthetic Appeal
An important aspect of the Canon Mews project is its emphasis on thoughtful material selection. The architects utilized bricks reclaimed from the site, which were cleaned and carefully reinstated to complement the existing mews properties. Rounded bullnose bricks at the entrances add a softer, refined touch, while timber-clad vestibules and garage doors reflect the traditional wooden frontages of neighboring homes.
The homes diverge aesthetically with an upper storey slightly set back from the main façade, clad in vibrant red zinc, providing a striking contemporary contrast to the traditional materials utilized below. This mix not only respects the historic context but also suggests a forward-thinking vision.
Sustainable and Durable Construction
Pend’s approach to Canon Mews prioritizes longevity and fine details, setting the properties apart from typical new-build housing. The internal material palette harmonizes refinement with robustness; durable porcelain tiles on the ground floor lead to solid timber treads on the staircase, harmonizing beautifully with wooden floorboards above.
The overarching goal, as articulated by Anderson, was to facilitate a holistic focus on quality, ensuring that every stage of the project maintained high standards. The collaboration with Gloss Projects and Niksen, an independent real estate agency, further solidified this commitment to excellence.

With Canon Mews, Pend aims to inspire broader discussions around the potential of small urban sites.
