OneSubsea, a joint venture backed by SLB, Aker Solutions, and Subsea7, has secured a contract which it claims is one of the largest umbilical contracts awarded in the industry to date, for a field development project in Indonesian waters.

The contract was awarded by Eni North Ganal Limited, a subsidiary of Searah Limited, which is a joint venture between Eni and Petronas. This impressive deal will see OneSubsea deliver a steel tube umbilical system specifically for the Kutei North Hub field development project located offshore East Kalimantan.
Project Specifications
Delving deeper into the specifics, OneSubsea is tasked with engineering, procuring, and manufacturing an extensive 94.6 kilometers of umbilical capable of withstanding water depths of up to 2,200 meters. The total system weight is projected to be around 6,700 tons, with a design pressure rating of 10,000 psi. This combination of scale and resilience marks this project as one of the most significant umbilical contracts in the industry to date.
h2>Efficiency and Innovation
“Operators are looking for partners who can help them move projects forward with confidence,” explains Mads Hjelmeland, Chief Executive Officer of SLB OneSubsea. “This award demonstrates how we combine technical expertise with innovative manufacturing capabilities to support efficient project execution and accelerated delivery, while maintaining the reliability and performance required for demanding deepwater developments.” His emphasis on partnership speaks volumes about the high expectations and collaborative spirit in offshore projects.
Advanced Production Techniques
OneSubsea is employing its Oscilay and planetary production lines to enhance production efficiency significantly. This strategy not only promises increased output but also aims to substantially reduce delivery timelines compared to traditional single-line methods. Such technological advancements are crucial in a sector where time and efficiency are paramount.
Notable Components of the Contract
As part of this contract, OneSubsea will also produce a single continuous length of umbilical measuring 30 kilometers, which alone will weigh approximately 2,100 tons. This component necessitates specialized large-scale carousel capacity for both manufacturing and storage, showcasing the logistical challenges typically associated with such expansive offshore projects.
Field Development Details
The Kutei North Hub development is ambitious, involving the drilling of 16 producing wells situated at depths between 1,700 and 2,000 meters. Additionally, the project will require the installation of comprehensive subsea systems linked to a newly constructed Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit. This FPSO is engineered to process over 1 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, in addition to handling 90,000 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate, with a storage capacity reaching up to 1.4 million barrels.
Collaborative Ventures
In a related dimension, the Italian engineering, drilling, and construction services giant Saipem has secured a remarkable $2 billion assignment connected to the FPSO unit for this ambitious project. Such collaborations exemplify the intricate web of partnerships that drives offshore development forward, emphasizing the importance of synergy and teamwork in large-scale ventures.
