Odfjell Drilling Extends Rig Contract with Norwegian Oil & Gas Operator for One Year

Odfjell Drilling: A Leader in Offshore Drilling Contracts

Established 53 years ago, Odfjell Drilling has solidified its stature as a key player in the offshore drilling industry. Recently, the company achieved significant recognition by obtaining a contract extension from Aker BP, a leading oil and gas operator in Norway, for its semi-submersible rig, Deepsea Nordkapp. This rig has been actively working on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) since its inception in 2019.

With the latest contract extension, Odfjell Drilling has not just secured additional work but has also extended the rig’s firm contract backlog to the end of 2028. This timeline illustrates Aker BP’s ongoing confidence in the capabilities of the Deepsea Nordkapp. The operators have the option to extend this agreement even further, showcasing a mutual commitment between the two firms.

The financial aspects of this extension are yet to be defined fully; however, the operating rate will be determined by the end of 2026. This rate will reflect current market conditions and will be established by two independent rig brokers, which ensures a fair and competitive pricing structure.

Kjetil Gjersdal, the CEO of Odfjell Drilling, expressed his enthusiasm over the contract renewal, stating, “This extension is testament to the continuous world-class performance delivered by Deepsea Nordkapp and its crew and extends our commitment to the semi-alliance we have with Aker BP.” This sentiment reflects Odfjell’s commitment to maintaining high operational standards while fostering long-term relationships with clients.

Since its delivery in 2019, the Deepsea Nordkapp has maintained a reliable partnership with Aker BP, contributing to drilling operations that are crucial to Norway’s energy sector. The extension until at least 2028 further solidifies this bond, which is essential as Norway continues to play a pivotal role in the European energy landscape.

Odfjell Drilling’s relationship with Aker BP is part of a broader strategic approach, as the company was one of three offshore drilling contractors that formed drilling and wells alliances with Aker BP in January 2023. These alliances aim to streamline drilling activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and sharpen operational efficiency.

Originally named Stena Midmax, the Deepsea Nordkapp is classified as a sixth-generation dynamically positioned rig, designed to operate in harsh environments and is winterized for extreme conditions. This robust construction ensures that it can effectively meet the challenges posed by the Norwegian offshore landscape.

In addition to strengthening existing partnerships, Odfjell Drilling continues to grow its fleet. Recently, the company completed the acquisition of the Deepsea Bollsta, rebranding it as Deepsea Bergen. This expansion reflects Odfjell’s proactive approach in adapting to a dynamic offshore drilling market, positioning itself to cater to the increasing demands of oil and gas exploration and development.

As Odfjell Drilling moves forward with these strategic initiatives, its leadership and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly enhance its standing in the fiercely competitive offshore drilling sector.
