McDermott’s Strategic Partnership with Saudi Aramco: A New Era for Offshore Engineering
U.S.-based McDermott International has recently solidified its position within the energy sector by joining the esteemed contractor pool chosen by Saudi Arabia’s Aramco. This partnership ensures that McDermott continues to play a pivotal role in supporting large-scale energy, downstream, petrochemical, and low-carbon projects throughout the Kingdom.
The Importance of the PMC Long-Term Agreement
Through a strategic long-term agreement (LTA) for project management consultancy (PMC), McDermott becomes one of just eleven selected contractors for this extensive multi-year endeavor. This relationship enables the company to utilize its proven engineering and project management capabilities to contribute significantly to Aramco’s ambitious investment programs.
Michael McKelvy, the Chief Executive Officer and Chair of McDermott’s Board, emphasized the shared commitment to localization and sustainable development. He stated, “Just as the United States and the Kingdom share a commitment to long-term collaboration, we share a commitment with SLFE to localization, knowledge transfer and sustainable capacity building within the Kingdom.” This emphasizes not only a partnership in projects but a broader vision of cooperative growth and development.
Leveraging Global Expertise
By entering this agreement, McDermott plans to leverage its global delivery model and technical expertise. This capability enables the company to provide a comprehensive range of services, including front-end development and project management consultancy. The collaboration combines the strengths of McDermott’s international experience with the local insights and execution capabilities of its partner, Solutions Leaders Fayez Engineering (SLFE).
Rob Shaul, Senior Vice President of Low Carbon Solutions at McDermott, reinforced the significance of this agreement, noting it reflects Aramco’s confidence in the firm’s proven execution abilities. The integration of SLFE’s local support and McDermott’s global knowledge presents a formidable partnership poised to tackle complex projects efficiently.
A Localized Approach to Execution
A critical aspect of this collaboration involves establishing an integrated execution model that combines in-kingdom and out-of-kingdom strategies. This approach ensures that projects align with Aramco’s localization goals and In-Kingdom Total Value Add (IKTVA) objectives. While SLFE leads the engineering aspects and client support within Saudi Arabia, McDermott takes charge of overall execution planning, governance, and technical leadership from its established global engineering centers.
Ashraf Alkhaznadar, President and CEO of SLFE, expressed pride in partnering with McDermott, highlighting the complementary strengths they bring to the agreement, supporting Aramco’s long-term vision while advancing local engineering capabilities.
McDermott’s Global Projects
Beyond the partnership with Aramco, McDermott remains active in various global projects. Recently, the firm unveiled a revolutionary concept for a blue ammonia floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit in collaboration with BW Offshore. This innovative project reflects McDermott’s commitment to developing sustainable energy solutions.
Additionally, the company is making strides in offshore decommissioning as demonstrated by a major project with QatarEnergy. These initiatives not only emphasize McDermott’s footprint in the industry but also showcase its adaptability and readiness to tackle evolving energy landscape challenges.
Looking Ahead
As McDermott embarks on this new chapter in its relationship with Saudi Aramco, the firm stands at the forefront of engineering and construction in the offshore energy sector. This collaboration, grounded in shared goals of localization and capacity building, sets the stage for significant advancements in energy projects across the Kingdom. With a strong foundation of trust and capability, the future looks promising for McDermott and its partners.
