Architect Paloma Bau and creative director Ausiàs Pérez’s shared office, Sornells 21, located in Valencia’s vibrant Ruzafa neighborhood, is a stunning example of how cultural influences can reshape workspace design. A Culinary Heart
At the center of Sornells 21 is a large communal kitchen, illuminated by bespoke lighting inspired by traditional noren curtains from Japanese izakayas. The kitchen serves not only as a culinary space but also as the “nerve centre,” encouraging informal gatherings and collaboration. Bau mentions that transforming this area into a bar-like atmosphere was a primary goal, echoing the welcoming essence of Tokyo’s izakayas, known for their casual dining and vibrant social scenes.
A Fusion of Influences
The design pays homage to various elements of Japanese architecture, particularly the tiled facades and pavements of Tokyo. Throughout the 170-square-meter U-shaped structure, traditional influences meld with contemporary sensibilities, creating environments that shift in character.
