Operation Southern Readiness: A Landmark Exercise
Operation Southern Readiness, a significant multinational maritime security training exercise, is currently taking place in Kochi, India. This first-of-its-kind event is hosted by the Southern Naval Command, under the leadership of the Indian Navy-led Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154).
Participants and Scope
Spanning four days, the exercise has gathered an impressive 254 participants from 26 nations, showcasing a robust commitment to international maritime collaboration. This gathering not only emphasizes the diverse participation of nations but also highlights the shared goal of enhancing maritime security across global waters.
Strategic Collaboration
The training is bolstered by the efforts of 74 skilled facilitators, along with support from four international organizations and various subject matter experts. Command Structure and Leadership
CTF 154, the training-driven task force under CMF, is commanded by the Indian Navy. Its primary focus is to enhance interoperability and combat readiness among its members through targeted joint training initiatives. During the opening ceremony, Commodore Milind M Mokashi, Commander of CTF 154, articulated the significance of this unique exercise. He was joined by Commodore Dan Thomas, Deputy Commander of the Combined Maritime Forces, and Rear Admiral Deepak Singhal, Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Headquarters of Southern Naval Command.
Day One: Foundations of Training
The first day of Operation Southern Readiness was packed with essential training sessions. Participants engaged in ship management training and special security practices. A key highlight was a presentation by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, addressing maritime security threats specifically in regions such as the Red Sea and the Western Indian Ocean.
Skills Development
In addition to theoretical knowledge, participants honed practical skills critical for maritime operations. They underwent training in ship handling, astro navigation, damage control, firefighting, distress communications, and simulator-based training infrastructures. This hands-on approach not only equips naval forces with the necessary skills but also fosters teamwork and leadership capabilities.
