India Calls on US Diplomat Again After Fatal Strikes in Gulf of Oman Claim 3 Indian Seafarers

Rising Tensions: U.S. Attacks on Commercial Vessels in the Gulf of Oman

    Recent Events

India recently summoned U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks for a strong protest regarding attacks by U.S. forces on commercial vessels that carry Indian seafarers in the Gulf of Oman. This diplomatic action was prompted by the strike on the MT Jalveer, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged tanker with 20 Indian crew members aboard. This incident followed the earlier attack on the MT Settebello, which tragically resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has expressed grave concern over these incidents, emphasizing the avoidable loss of lives and calling for urgent measures to protect civilian ships operating in the region.

    Details of the Attacks

In just a span of four days, three vessels carrying Indian seafarers faced aggressive actions. The sequence of attacks began on June 8 with the MT Marivex, where a fire erupted onboard after what was presumed to be a strike. Fortunately, all 24 Indian crew members were reported safe.

Following this, the MT Settebello was attacked on June 10, leading to a devastating loss where three Indian sailors, initially unaccounted for, were later confirmed dead. In yet another incident, on June 12, MT Jalveer was targeted; however, all crew members were successfully evacuated.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the attacks were justified as the vessels were allegedly attempting to transport Iranian oil, leading to U.S. military engagement. The Pentagon stated that the U.S. aircraft fired two Hellfire missiles after the crew of MT Jalveer did not comply with U.S. instructions.

    Diplomatic Interventions

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not only registered strong protests but has also raised broader concerns about the implications of these military actions on international maritime safety and commerce stability. The MEA insisted that such assaults undermine the foundation of civilian shipping and urged the U.S. to take immediate steps to avoid further civilian casualties.

This recent summons marks the second diplomatic engagement within a week, signifying the serious nature of the situation as tensions escalate between the involved parties.

    Advisory for Indian Seafarers

In response to these alarming events, India’s Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) issued a new maritime security advisory aimed at Indian seafarers working in the volatile regions around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. Official estimates indicate that around 622 Indian seafarers are presently aboard 13 India-flagged vessels in these waters.

The Indian maritime sector boasts approximately 320,000 seafarers globally, securing India’s position as the second-largest workforce in the maritime industry. With nearly 18,000 Indians employed on foreign-flagged vessels in the Gulf region, ensuring their safety and well-being is a priority for the Indian government.

    Regional Implications

The Strait of Hormuz is crucial, as about 20% of the world’s energy supplies pass through this key shipping route. Repeated disruptions and aggressive military actions risk severe repercussions not just for the involved nations but also for global oil and gas markets.

Indian officials have voiced that any restrictions on shipping could particularly disrupt liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies to countries reliant on this energy source.

    Call for Diplomacy

As tensions rise, India has stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue and adhering to international norms. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the importance of ensuring that military actions do not hamper the welfare of innocents. He reiterated that unimpeded access through the Strait of Hormuz is essential and should be upheld in accordance with international law.

Iran has similarly condemned the strikes, asserting that the U.S. actions threaten freedom of navigation in international waters, underscoring the complexities surrounding maritime security in this strategic region.

The situation remains fluid, and with seafarers’ safety becoming a pressing issue, the call for diplomatic solutions is louder than ever.
