    Hybrid Ocean Energy Vessel Arrives in Norway for Final Construction

    The hybrid power ocean energy construction vessel (OECV) named Island Evolution has reached Norwegian shores, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of offshore energy infrastructure.

    Constructed by VARD, a Norwegian shipbuilder, Island Offshore commissioned the first of these innovative vessels for hybrid power operations in May 2024. The vessel, designed with cutting-edge technology, is expected to revolutionize the way offshore construction is conducted. Notably, Island Evolution will be accompanied by a second vessel, Island Explorer, with the latter’s order placed just three months after the first.

    The construction timeline has been meticulously planned, with the keel laying for Island Evolution taking place in May 2025. Subsequently, the keel for Island Explorer was laid in September 2025. This strategic approach has ensured progress is on track for both vessels, marking a significant leap toward sustainability in marine energy operations.

    Island Evolution made its grand entrance into the waters during a launch ceremony in Romania on February 9, 2026. Following initial outfitting phases at Vard Shipyards in Romania, the vessel departed for its final outfitting in Norway, completing its journey on July 29, 2026. It will soon undergo finishing touches at Vard Langsten, ensuring that it meets the high standards set for modern offshore construction.

    Both Island Evolution and Island Explorer are impressive in their design, adhering to the VARD 3 25 specifications. Each vessel stretches 120 meters in length and is equipped to handle a variety of subsea operations. These capabilities include inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR) tasks, as well as pipe laying, subsea infrastructure construction, installation, diving support, and provision for remotely operated underwater inspections. This diversity in functionality makes them invaluable assets for the offshore energy industry.

    Central to the operational technology of these vessels is a 250-ton heave-compensated subsea crane, which will enable precise handling of heavy equipment and materials. The vessels are also outfitted with DP2 capability, ensuring they can maintain position accurately in dynamic marine environments. Furthermore, with accommodation for up to 120 personnel, Island Evolution is designed to support extended missions while ensuring crew comfort and safety.
