A Historic Keel-Laying Ceremony
Keel-laying ceremonies are monumental events in the world of yacht building, serving as a celebration of craftsmanship and a milestone in the life of a vessel. The recent ceremony for Project Kansei was particularly special. Jeroen van der Meer, CEO of Heesen Yachts, welded a 1978 coin to the keel, marking the year the shipyard first opened its doors. This act of homage is fitting, as the 184-footer (56-meter) yacht is set to launch in 2028, coinciding with the shipyard’s 50th anniversary.
The Essence of Kansei
The name “Project Kansei” is derived from the Japanese word meaning “emotional sensitivity and perception of others.” This nomenclature beautifully aligns with Heesen’s philosophy of customizing each yacht to create a unique experience for its owners and their guests. This personal touch adds a layer of emotional connection to the ownership experience, reflecting the deep cultural roots the design embraces.
Design Influences and Innovations
Although Project Kansei is classified as a spec project, it integrates numerous features inspired by feedback from Heesen’s previous clients. She represents the latest in the shipyard’s 55-meter steel series, which has garnered acclaim, exemplified by the delivery of the yacht Pa’lante. The design process has been highly collaborative, incorporating input from project managers, captains, and crew, resulting in practical innovations like a transformer swim platform. This distinct feature provides easier access to the water and extends to over three feet (1 meter) longer than previous iterations, reflecting a commitment to enhancing user experience.
A Relaxing Atmosphere
The design team led by Luca Dini has worked closely with Heesen Yachts in the past and is fully embracing the Kansei concept. They aim to cultivate a soothing and relaxing atmosphere throughout the yacht’s interior, accommodating up to 12 guests. The formal dining area on the bridge deck, complemented by a bar, embodies this ethos. Aided by materials like raffia for the ceilings and backlit rice paper, the design promotes gentle tones and textures, delivering a serene environment.
Emphasizing Wellbeing
Project Kansei goes beyond aesthetics, emphasizing the importance of wellbeing on board. Situated aft on the main deck, the gym is tailored for fitness, offering dedicated yoga space that merges seamlessly with an outdoor area featuring a juice bar. But the concept of relaxation extends below decks, where guests can enter bright, airy spaces through large skylights. They have the choice of unwinding in a sauna or hammam, with additional amenities like a curbless shower capable of producing snow, mist, or water, enriching the onboard experience.
Customization Opportunities
As an owner, there is still ample opportunity to personalize Project Kansei. At this stage in the building process, individuals can contribute their preferences to the interior spaces, ensuring a reflection of their unique identities. Scheduled for launch in October 2028, with delivery expected early in 2029, owners can look forward to making cherished memories aboard this magnificent yacht.
