Norway’s Floating Production Solutions Provider BW Offshore Achieves a Key Milestone with FPSO BW Opal

BW Offshore, a renowned player in the floating production solutions sector, has recently announced a significant operational achievement concerning its floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, the BW Opal. Deployed at the Santos-operated Barossa LNG project, located off the coast of northern Australia, this development marks a substantial stride in the ongoing efforts to harness natural resources sustainably.
The FPSO BW Opal has successfully completed an interim performance test (IPT) as part of the commissioning program for the Barossa LNG project. This joint venture includes Santos with a 50% stake, PRISM Energy International Australia holding 37.5%, and JERA possessing the remaining 12.5%. The IPT results indicate that the BW Opal is performing optimally, showcasing the efficiency of its production, processing, and utility systems.
According to BW Offshore, the successful completion of the IPT represents an “important” milestone, confirming that the vessel’s systems are integrated effectively and can deliver stable performance under production conditions. This accomplishment not only highlights the technological advancements of the FPSO but also underscores the collaborative efforts of the involved parties to ensure seamless operations in one of the world’s competitive energy sectors.
After the restart of production in early May 2026, the FPSO BW Opal has continued to produce and export gas consistently. BW Offshore has coordinated closely with the Barossa field operator during this crucial phase, ensuring that production rates align with capacity while maintaining safety as a top priority.
In addition to focusing on safe operations, BW Offshore is committed to completing all remaining commissioning activities. Progressing towards practical completion will signify the transition to the long-term firm contract period for the BW Opal, a vital step in securing the project’s future and its contributions to the energy market.
The BW Opal is strategically positioned at the Barossa gas field, situated approximately 285 kilometers offshore from Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory. This site is expected to service the Darwin LNG plant for the next two decades, making its operational success pivotal not only for the stakeholders involved but also for the local energy landscape.
