Karoon Energy’s Strategic Shift in Offshore Operations
Karoon Energy, an ASX-listed international oil and gas exploration and production company, has embarked on an exciting new chapter by taking over the operatorship from Altera & Ocyan (A&O) at the FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading) vessel, a crucial component in their oil project off Brazil’s coast. This transition marks a significant milestone for Karoon as they expand their operational capabilities in the competitive offshore sector.

The acquisition of the FPSO Cidade de Itajaí at the end of April 2025 was a strategic move for Karoon. This FPSO plays an integral role in the Baúna project, located in BM-S-40, and is designed to optimize oil production capabilities. In preparation for this transition, Karoon signed a transition services agreement with A&O, which was aimed at maintaining operational continuity and ensuring a seamless handover.
The formal transition of operatorship completed in May 2026, following extensive internal preparation that included building their capacity through staff recruitment and the establishment of management systems. A significant factor in this process was securing necessary regulatory approvals from Brazilian authorities, an essential step to ensure compliance with local regulations.
In a notable move, more than 80% of the existing FPSO team transferred to Karoon, partnering with their major maintenance contractor, Gran Services. This transfer speaks volumes about workforce loyalty and the company’s commitment to retaining expertise as they make this operational shift. Following the expiration of the transitional services agreement on June 1, 2026, Karoon focused on optimizing operational costs, heralding a new era for the FPSO.
Kicking off this chapter, Carri Lockhart, Karoon’s CEO and Managing Director, expressed immense pride in the achievement. He highlighted 2026 as one of the busiest years in the company’s history, with over 700 personnel dedicated to realizing strategic work scopes. Lockhart emphasized that the operatorship transition signifies an evolution for Karoon, allowing them to operate as a full-scope operator of offshore oil and gas production.
In his comments, he also extended heartfelt gratitude to the staff and contractors who have worked tirelessly to prepare for this milestone. Lockhart’s confidence in Karoon’s capacity to ensure a strong safety performance and reliable operations reflects the company’s intent to add substantial value to the Baúna project for the long term.
To further complement this operational transition, Karoon announced ambitious revitalization and life extension projects for Baúna in August 2025. The company anticipates an expenditure of approximately $55-65 million in 2026, with an additional forecast of $80-90 million set aside for the period between 2030 and 2034. These investments are geared towards improving the efficiency and longevity of their offshore operations.
The Baúna project encompasses the Baúna, Piracaba, and Patola fields, all situated in concession BM-S-40 offshore Brazil. The FPSO Cidade de Itajaí is equipped to function at water depths of up to 1,000 meters, boasting a production capacity of 80,000 barrels of oil per day and gas compression capabilities of 2 million cubic meters daily. This advanced vessel, constructed at Singapore’s Jurong shipyard in 1995 and converted for its current role in 2012, underscores Karoon’s commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technology in the pursuit of energy production.
As Karoon Energy transitions into this new operational phase, their focus on maximizing operational efficiency and ensuring environmental compliance will play a crucial role in their long-term success. The team’s determination and expertise will be pivotal in achieving the ambitious goals set for the Baúna project and beyond, securing Karoon’s position as a competitive player in the international oil and gas arena.
