South Korean Cable Maker Receives Its Second Cable Laying Vessel

South Korea’s Taihan Cable & Solution has made significant strides in the offshore wind industry by successfully delivering its second cable-laying vessel (CLV) ahead of schedule, a notable achievement following its acquisition from the Norwegian DOF Group.

In May, Taihan Cable announced that it had acquired the 2016-built Skandi Connector from DOF, marking the introduction of Korea’s second dedicated offshore wind CLV. This move underscores Taihan’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities in the growing renewable energy sector.

The Skandi Connector, a robust vessel weighing 10,000 tons and measuring 138.4 meters in length, was delivered at Gamcheon Port in Busan on July 7—earlier than its expected delivery date in August. The timely arrival of the vessel not only demonstrates effective project management but also positions Taihan to rapidly scale its offshore wind operations.

This modern CLV was designed by the renowned Dutch shipbuilder Damen, and it comes equipped with advanced technologies that have facilitated its deployment on 27 projects thus far. These projects have seen the installation of approximately 1,300 kilometers of submarine cables, critical components for offshore wind farms that need reliable connections to shore.

With the addition of Skandi Connector to its fleet, Taihan now operates two CLVs, including PALOS, recognized as the only offshore wind CLV currently operating in Korea. This strategic move allows Taihan to implement a dual-track installation system, ensuring that the most suitable vessel is utilized based on the specific characteristics and environmental conditions of each project. This flexibility enhances operational efficiency and demonstrates Taihan’s proactive approach in a rapidly evolving industry.

Moreover, the growing fleet of specialized vessels reflects not only Taihan’s ambition but also the increasing demand for offshore wind energy in South Korea. As the country works towards its renewable energy goals, advancements like these are crucial for maintaining competitiveness in the international market.

The offshore wind sector is experiencing a dynamic shift, and companies like Taihan Cable & Solution are at the forefront of this transformation. With their dedication to technological innovation and efficient project execution, they are well-positioned to contribute to the sustainable energy initiatives that are shaping the future of energy in Korea and beyond.
