The Netherlands-headquartered offshore energy engineering player Enersea has unveiled a liquefied natural gas (LNG) loading platform concept as part of an LNG infrastructure development in South America, spotlighting the role of innovation in upping the LNG terminal development ante while cutting costs.

In an exciting development for the offshore energy sector, Enersea has introduced a pioneering liquefied natural gas (LNG) loading platform concept. This innovative approach aims to redefine LNG terminal infrastructure in South America by providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional jetty-based systems. With the increasing global demand for cleaner energy solutions, Enersea’s initiative is timely, emphasizing the importance of innovation in enhancing efficiency while simultaneously reducing costs.
The design of Enersea’s LNG loading platform is tailored for shallow offshore and nearshore environments, which are often less accessible for conventional LNG terminals. By minimizing offshore construction activities, the platform not only accelerates project schedules but also significantly lowers overall project costs. This efficiency is particularly crucial in regions where resources are tighter and timelines are of the essence.
One of the standout features of this concept is its compact design, which allows for a complete assembly onshore. Once constructed, the platform can be installed offshore in a single lift, drastically reducing installation risks and execution time. This streamlined process demonstrates how strategic and innovative engineering solutions can address the challenges typically associated with large-scale marine projects. Recent evaluations of this approach during an undisclosed LNG infrastructure development in South America have yielded positive results, affirming the platform’s viability.
Enersea confidently states, “The project confirmed the benefits of the platform approach, showcasing how innovative offshore engineering can accelerate terminal development while reducing complexity and costs.” This statement not only highlights Enersea’s commitment to enhancing LNG infrastructure but also underscores their drive to contribute positively to the offshore energy landscape.
Amid the excitement surrounding Enersea’s advancements, the energy sector in South America is already buzzing with ongoing LNG projects. For instance, the highly anticipated Argentina LNG project situated in the San Matías Gulf of Argentina’s Río Negro province, is set to make waves in the region’s energy scenario. Under the management of Southern Energy, this floating LNG (FLNG) project has an impressive combined capacity of approximately 6 million tons per annum (mtpa).
The Argentina LNG project aims to liquefy natural gas sourced from the General San Martin pipeline, utilizing the FLNG Hilli Episeyo. With commercial operations projected to commence in September 2027, the anticipation surrounding this project has been palpable. Following close behind is the second FLNG unit, the MK II, expected to commence operations in late 2028. This endeavor is anticipated to produce around 2.45 million tons of LNG annually during its initial phase, translating into roughly 28 cargoes per year.
