Arriving at a ship recycling facility in Denmark, the FPSO Cidade de Niterói MV18 marks a significant milestone for the MODEC Group. The vessel departed Brazil after successfully completing demobilization activities at the Marlim Leste oil field in the Campos Basin on May 8, 2026. This transition highlights the lifecycle of offshore production units and the continuing shift towards sustainable practices within the maritime industry.

MODEC, a leader in the floating production sector, undertook the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) of the FPSO. This vessel was contracted by Petrobras for the Marlim Leste project, where it operated effectively since the first oil was extracted in February 2009. Over 17 years, it processed approximately 159 million barrels of oil, showcasing its efficiency and reliability in harsh offshore environments.

As the FPSO Cidade de Niterói MV18 concludes its operational journey, it is set to undergo a meticulous recycling process in Denmark. This facility adheres to stringent regulations, including the EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. Such adherence reflects MODEC’s commitment to environmental sustainability, especially crucial in today’s corporate landscape.

The FPSO itself was a marvel of engineering, boasting the capability to process 100,000 barrels of crude oil each day alongside 124 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. With a storage capacity of 1,600,000 barrels, its design was integral to maximizing production efficiency while maintaining safety standards in one of the most challenging offshore locations.

MODEC is actively investing in innovative technologies to enhance the sustainability of its operations. A recent collaboration with Eld Energy aims to develop a 1.2 MW power system integrated with carbon capture technology specifically for FPSOs. This venture underscores the industry’s shift toward reducing carbon footprints and embracing greener practices while improving operational efficiency.
