BeHydro’s Hydrogen Engine Advances Shipping’s Future

Exciting Developments in Hydrogen-Fuelled Marine Technology

In a significant advancement for the maritime industry, the UK-based classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted type approval for BeHydro’s groundbreaking 100% hydrogen-fuelled marine engine. This innovative engine has been developed through a collaboration between CMB.TECH and the Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) Engines, specifically targeting the growing need for hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines.

Lloyd’s Register’s type approval certificate confirms that BeHydro’s hydrogen engine adheres to their stringent safety, performance, and reliability standards for marine applications. This milestone underlines a pivotal step forward in making hydrogen-fuelled propulsion technology commercially viable for ships.

The hydrogen engine was meticulously developed and tested at ABC Engines’ facility in Ghent, designed to operate solely on hydrogen with no need for pilot fuels. This focus not only simplifies system architecture but also supports the vision of zero carbon emissions on board, making this technology an attractive alternative for vessel operators pursuing sustainable options.

    Industry Perspectives

Claudene Sharp-Patel, Global Technical Director at Lloyd’s Register, remarked on the significance of this approval: “The issuance of this type approval certificate highlights that hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine technology is maturing and becoming a legitimate option for maritime applications.” This statement emphasizes the critical role independent certification plays in fostering trust and confidence among shipowners regarding emerging fuel technologies.

It’s notable that Lloyd’s Register previously awarded type approval for BeHydro’s dual-fuel hydrogen engine in 2023, marking a historic first for dual-fuel technology in this arena.

Tim Berckmoes, the CEO of ABC Engines, also stressed the importance of this breakthrough: “This LR type approval of our BeHydro 100% hydrogen engines with zero emissions confirms the future-proof technology that BeHydro can offer to innovative shipowners worldwide. The engine range encompasses outputs from 900 kW to 2670 kW, catering to various marine applications.” The flexibility in engine offerings signifies a broad potential for various vessels to adopt this new technology.

Lloyd’s Register has also published a comprehensive report as part of its Fuel for thought series, assessing hydrogen’s potential role in maritime decarbonization. The report not only discusses the advantages of hydrogen but also tackles the safety concerns, necessary infrastructure, and cost challenges that currently hinder widespread adoption.
