A multi-client 3D seismic survey is set to take place in one of Brazil’s most promising frontier regions, with Norway’s energy data and intelligence company TGS and its joint venture partner, U.S.-based SLB, leading the initiative. This survey aims to significantly enhance hydrocarbon exploration efforts in the South American nation.
The project focuses on the Pelotas Sul Phase 1 multi-client 3D seismic survey in the Pelotas Basin off southern Brazil. This region features a balanced mixture of held and open acreage, providing ample opportunities for both immediate evaluations and future licensing possibilities.
The Ramform Tethys vessel commenced survey operations in December 2025, and it is expected to cover about 13,500 square kilometers. Data acquisition is set to be wrapped up in early Q3 2026. This undertaking is a pivotal move to enhance the high-quality seismic data arsenal in one of Brazil’s key frontier basins.
Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS, shares insights about the project, stating, “Pelotas Sul Phase 1 will provide valuable subsurface insight and help broaden the understanding of a basin that is gaining considerable client attention.” He added, “We previously announced Pelotas Norte in the northern part of the Pelotas Basin. We are excited to now announce Pelotas Sul, reinforcing our commitment to supporting customers in exploring new opportunities in southern Brazil.”
The Pelotas Basin has seen a surge of interest recently, fueled by extensive geological analogs. Successful exploration results from adjacent areas have sparked excitement among industry players. The basin is rich with various geological features, offering play concepts that include turbidite systems, deep-water channels, and both stratigraphic and structural traps that have yet to be fully explored.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of TGS’s recent success in securing a 3D streamer acquisition contract with an undisclosed oil and gas company in Africa and the Middle East, showcasing the company’s expanding influence in global energy exploration.
