Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) has shed light on its exploratory drilling activities in the offshore Hidaka area of Hokkaido.

On June 10, 2026, JAPEX successfully completed its exploratory drilling operations in the offshore Hidaka area of Hokkaido. The drilling initiative began on March 24, 2026, targeting potential natural gas deposits in the sea region. The rig employed for this crucial task, the Valaris 8504, played a pivotal role in the drilling efforts.
This exploration was strategically planned based on previous drilling results from 2019, which indicated potential gas reserves about 5 kilometers northwest of previous drilling sites, approximately 50 kilometers offshore. The operation was conducted in challenging conditions, reaching a depth of 1,070 meters underwater, and the exploratory drilling extended even deeper, at 1,900 meters.
JAPEX’s exploratory drilling activities were characterized by a collaborative approach, emphasizing understanding and cooperation with the local community, particularly with stakeholders in the fishing industry and local governmental bodies. This collaboration ensured that the drilling activities were conducted smoothly, with minimal disruption to local livelihoods.
The company released a statement highlighting that during the drilling, “we tested the reservoir where indications of natural gas were recognized and confirmed the presence of natural gas in part of the reservoir, acquiring valuable geological data.” This confirmation is a significant milestone for JAPEX, as it suggests the potential for natural gas resources in the region.

This drilling initiative was recognized as a significant effort by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which selected it as a subsidized project through the ‘Subsidy for Geological Survey for Domestic Oil and Natural Gas in FY2024.’ This endorsement underscores the importance of the project within the broader context of Japan’s energy strategy.
While the initial findings indicated the presence of natural gas, JAPEX noted that the confirmed volume does not meet the criteria for “immediate commercialization.” Nevertheless, the company plans to conduct a thorough analysis of the geological data gathered during the drilling process to assess the future exploration and development opportunities in the area. This thoughtful approach showcases JAPEX’s commitment to sustainable exploration and the prudent management of natural resources.
