In a significant milestone for the cruise industry, Explora Journeys has officially named EXPLORA III in Barcelona. This new vessel stands out as the cruise brand’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship, a crucial step in the organization’s ambitious plan to operate a total of six vessels in its fleet.
Delivery and Maiden Voyage
The journey of EXPLORA III began on July 23, 2026, when the ship was delivered in Genoa. Following its delivery, the vessel embarked on a Mediterranean prelude voyage before arriving in Barcelona for a spectacular naming ceremony. On August 3, she set sail on a seven-night maiden journey to Lisbon, marking the onset of a season that will explore Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, and North America.
Innovation in Sustainability
What makes EXPLORA III particularly remarkable is its use of LNG technology, which allows it to operate in a more environmentally friendly manner. This vessel is designed to accommodate future renewable alternatives, such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG, when they become commercially viable. Additionally, the capability for shore power ensures that the ship can connect to onshore electricity at suitable ports, allowing it to shut down its engines while docked, further reducing emissions during port visits.
A Memorable Naming Ceremony
The naming ceremony was graced by senior officials from both Explora Journeys and MSC Group, along with distinguished guests, travel partners, and media representatives. Notable speeches were delivered by Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group Cruise Division; Anna Nash, President of Explora Journeys; José Alberto Carbonell, President of the Port of Barcelona; and Cristina Ozores, the ship’s Godmother. Ozores, a recognized marine educator and conservation advocate, officially blessed and named the vessel, embodying the spirit of eco-consciousness that defines EXPLORA III.
As the vessel’s maiden guest, Global Brand Ambassador Jannik Sinner boarded during the Mediterranean prelude journey, offering an exciting glimpse into the experiences that await onboard.
Redefining Luxury and Space
EXPLORA III promises to elevate the cruising experience, featuring the most spacious design in the Explora Journeys fleet to date. Guests can look forward to expanded public areas and a variety of new culinary concepts. Wellness spaces have been designed for relaxation and rejuvenation, promoting opportunities for guests to connect with the ocean and their surroundings.
Antonio Di Nenno, the Director of Architecture & Design, emphasizes that the evolution of casual luxury on EXPLORA III is a major enhancement, ensuring a consistent and mature aesthetic throughout the ship.
Construction Timeline Highlights
The journey of building EXPLORA III began with a steel-cutting ceremony at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard on September 6, 2023. The keel was laid on September 12, 2024, with commemorative coins placed inside the hull, marking a traditional milestone. The ship floated out on July 14, 2025, and successfully completed extensive sea trials on June 1, 2026. These trials were crucial in testing propulsion, navigation systems, safety features, and overall operational readiness in preparation for the ship’s public debut.
This comprehensive focus on sustainability and innovative luxury not only redefines the experience onboard EXPLORA III but also sets a precedent for future vessels in the cruise industry. The official launching of this first LNG-powered vessel marks a pivotal moment in the brand’s commitment to environmentally-conscious sea travel.
