    The U.S. Navy recently marked a significant milestone in naval warfare technology during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise. On July 17, the Navy implemented its Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC) for the first time as a one-way attack drone boat, targeting the decommissioned amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu. This historic live-fire exercise took place near Hawaii and represents a powerful integration of unmanned systems into traditional naval operations.

    The Setting: RIMPAC 2026

    RIMPAC 2026, running from June 24 to July 31, sees participation from 30 nations, approximately 30 ships, five submarines, over 190 aircraft, 15 national land forces, and more than 30,000 personnel. This extensive naval exercise is an opportunity for nations to simulate large-scale operations, hone military tactics, and improve interoperability among allied forces.

    The Strike

    The live attack was orchestrated by the Navy’s Unmanned Surface Vessel Division 32 (USVDIV-32), which deployed two GARC unmanned surface vessels during a sinking exercise (SINKEX). Before the GARCs engaged, the target had already endured strikes from various platforms, including submarine-launched Harpoon missiles, air-launched anti-ship missiles, land-based missile systems, and helicopter-fired precision weapons.

    Following these initial attacks, the GARCs were directed to detonate near the USS Peleliu’s waterline. This strategic timing allowed them to exploit the vessel’s already degraded defenses, inflicting further localized structural damage and flooding.

    Innovative Technology

    The GARCs leverage advanced autonomy with software developed by Anduril. Each craft can carry a payload of up to 1,000 pounds, though specifics on how much weight was allocated for explosives are unclear. This adaptability allows the Navy to utilize unmanned vessels in ways that augment and complement traditional weaponry.

    Sarah Weinstein, the commanding officer of USVDIV-32, expressed pride in the execution of the first GARC live fire during the exercise. In her LinkedIn post, she highlighted the precision with which her team operated and mentioned the unique perspective that the GARC offered from the field.

    USS Peleliu: A Brief Overview

    The USS Peleliu is a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship that measures 250 meters in length, 32.5 meters in beam, and has a draft of 8.2 meters. It displaces approximately 39,438 long tons at full load, with a capacity to carry more than 2,800 personnel, including sailors, aviation crews, and embarked Marines. While in service, this versatile vessel operated a variety of aircraft, including AV-8B Harrier attack aircraft and MV-22 Ospreys.

    Despite the ship’s notable size and capabilities, damage to crucial areas such as machinery spaces or aviation fuel infrastructure could dramatically reduce its effectiveness in supporting amphibious operations, demonstrating the strategic importance of target selection.
