    Allseas to Install Key Subsea Section of Remote Canadian Natural Gas Pipeline

    Allseas has secured a contract with Western LNG to install the critical subsea section of the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline in Canada.

    Located in the remote waters of north-western British Columbia, near the Alaska border, the subsea pipeline forms the final link in the 700-kilometer system that will transport Canadian natural gas to the planned Ksi Lisims LNG export facility on the Pacific coast. This strategic project positions Canada as a significant player in the global natural gas market, particularly as demand continues to rise in Asia.

    Allseas’ scope of work includes approximately 50 kilometers of 36- and 48-inch concrete-weight-coated pipeline. This pipeline will connect the onshore transmission system to the proposed floating LNG facility located on Pearse Island. The choice of concrete-weight-coated pipes adds a layer of protection and stability, which is crucial given the challenging offshore conditions.

    Offshore installation activities are set to commence in 2029, utilizing Allseas’ state-of-the-art pipelay vessels, Solitaire and Sandpiper. The installation will take place in water depths ranging from the shoreline to around 450 meters, showcasing the technical prowess required for such deep-water operations.

    The project entails a multitude of complex activities, including multiple shore crossings, shore pull-ins, above-water tie-ins, trenching activities, route stabilization, and both pre- and post-lay span rectification. The intricacies of these operations, combined with the remote location of the pipeline, present a technically demanding installation campaign, as highlighted by Allseas.

    The Ksi Lisims LNG facility is designed to have a capacity of 12 million tons per annum (mtpa) and is being developed in partnership by the Nisga’a Nation, Rockies LNG, and Western LNG. Situated on Nisga’a Nation-owned land, the facility benefits from direct and efficient access to the burgeoning Asian markets, which are in need of consistent and reliable energy sources.

    Environmental concerns have been a focal point for this project, and the PRGT pipeline has successfully obtained key environmental approvals. Additionally, it has been designated as a project of national interest by the Canadian government. This designation not only underscores the strategic importance of the project but also facilitates the necessary support for its advancement.

    Pending a final investment decision (FID) by the project co-developers, construction could potentially commence as early as 2027. This timeline indicates a rapid progression from planning to execution, showcasing the commitment from all stakeholders involved to bring this essential energy infrastructure to fruition.
