Among the constituents of the recovered mud, notable elements include yttrium and gadolinium, essential for numerous high-tech applications, such as aerospace, energy sectors, and magnetic resonance imaging technologies. Dysprosium, another key component, is particularly sought after for producing high-performance magnets, which are critical in electric vehicles. Future Mining Plans
In a proactive response to the discoveries, Japan has set its sights on large-scale mining trials planned for early 2027. The objective is to dredge an ambitious 350 metric tons of mud daily, which will then undergo processing at Minamitori Island before transportation to the mainland. This phase is crucial as it will evaluate the feasibility of commercial production, with a thorough assessment projected by March 2028. Kazushige Kikuchi, project manager at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), has emphasized the potential implications this project could hold for the nation’s resource independence.
Responding to China’s Export Controls
China’s tightening of export controls on heavy rare earth elements—ranging from limitations imposed in April 2025 to further restrictions in early 2027—has created a palpable urgency for Japan. In light of these geopolitical tensions, the ability to produce REEs domestically could provide a much-needed buffer against supply disruptions. For Japan, securing alternative sources of these critical materials is not just economically advantageous but essential for the sustainability of its high-tech industries.
