The Western Australian Government recently granted State Significant Project status to a Woodside Energy-operated offshore development project, recognized as Australia’s largest untapped conventional gas resource.

The proposed Browse to North West Shelf (NWS) Project is set to become a key player in the natural gas sector, boasting a forecast production capacity of 11.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and a peak condensate production rate of 50,000 barrels per day. This ambitious project aims to transport natural gas from the Calliance, Torosa, and Brecknock fields via a robust pipeline stretching approximately 900 kilometers to the existing Karratha gas plant. The design also incorporates two floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) units, further enhancing its operational capabilities.
Environmental considerations have been a priority in the project’s planning. A significant carbon capture and storage (CCS) solution is integrated into the development, which is expected to facilitate a reduction of 53 million tons (mt) CO2e of greenhouse gas emissions compared to the project’s 2019 Scope 1 emissions estimate. This effort underscores Woodside Energy’s commitment to sustainable practices while advancing the region’s energy infrastructure.
Securing State Significant Project status is a remarkable achievement for Woodside Energy, as it represents the utmost level of prioritization available under the Western Australian Government’s Lead Agency Framework. This classification not only streamlines the approvals process but also fosters coordinated engagement among various stakeholders, paving the way for the project to move smoothly towards critical approvals and developmental milestones.
An independent economic impact assessment has projected that the Browse to North West Shelf Project could generate a substantial long-term uplift of approximately A$141 billion in gross domestic product (GDP) nationally, alongside an influx of around A$56 billion in taxes and royalties. This economic boon includes an estimated A$19.8 billion specifically from petroleum resource rent tax, showcasing the project’s potential to transform Australia’s economic landscape.
In light of these developments, Woodside Energy has expressed its awareness of the importance of holistic government coordination to unlock the benefits associated with the Browse to North West Shelf Project. The company is committed to maintaining close working relationships with governmental bodies, industry players, Indigenous stakeholders, unions, and local communities as the project progresses through its various approvals and stages of development. The collaborative approach reflects a broader vision of ensuring that the project benefits all involved parties.
