Italy’s energy giant Eni has continued its contract awards spree for the third phase of its oil & gas development project off the coast of Côte d’Ivoire, with Saipem having been selected for the delivery of rigid pipelines and associated subsea structures.
The Baleine Phase 3 project promises to significantly ramp up production capabilities, with estimates projecting an increase from 60,000 to 150,000 barrels of oil per day. Natural gas output is also set to soar, climbing from 80 million to 200 million cubic feet daily. This ambitious expansion positions the Baleine project as one of West Africa’s largest offshore energy undertakings. Eni made the final investment decision (FID) in May, paving the way for this exciting phase.
Saipem’s scope of work is extensive, encompassing the engineering, fabrication, transportation, and installation of roughly 50 kilometers of rigid pipelines as well as related subsea structures. The contract also calls for the transportation and installation of flexible risers, flexible jumpers, subsea production systems (SPS), a three-kilometer-long flexible gas export flowline, and 22 kilometers of subsea umbilical. Such comprehensive planning ensures that the project not only meets current demands but also sets a solid foundation for future expansions.
With a timeframe of approximately three years, construction and deployment will primarily utilize the FDS and Shen Da vessels. Operations will occur at depths reaching up to 1,300 meters, making the Baleine development a cutting-edge venture in subsea engineering.
A new floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit is also part of the Baleine Phase 3 initiative, with Altera Infrastructure set to deliver it. TechnipFMC will play a crucial role in designing and manufacturing the flexible flowlines and risers necessary for the project’s success. Additionally, OneSubsea has been tasked with providing comprehensive subsea production systems for 13 wells, showcasing the collaboration and joint expertise driving this large-scale energy project.
Beyond the Côte d’Ivoire project, Saipem has secured another contract from Eni for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a new deoxygenation unit at Eni’s biorefinery located in Venice, Italy. The combined value of these contracts is estimated to be around €800 million, underscoring the financial and operational significance of these projects to both companies.
