The yachting world has lost a passionate advocate and seasoned professional with the passing of Buddy Haack on July 15, at the age of 75. Haack’s contributions as a representative of European superyacht builders in the United States and his subsequent role in managing yacht refits have left a significant legacy in the industry.
Born on December 5, 1950, in Iowa, Buddy Haack was the youngest of six children to Mary Louise and Meyel Herman “Bud” Haack, Sr., a decorated World War II veteran. Buddy, originally named Meyel Herman Haack, Jr., moved with his family to Florida during his childhood, where he grew up in Jacksonville Beach. It was here that he developed a love for the ocean, sparked by a passion for surfing that began at the tender age of 12. This early connection with the sea paved the way for his desire to pursue a career in marine sciences, initially aspiring to become an oceanographer while studying at Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach.
After graduating in 1970, Haack took a pivotal step by enrolling at Florida State University, but he quickly realized that his true calling lay not in academic research but in the practical world of yachting. He enrolled in maritime training schools in Fort Lauderdale, embarking on a career that many young graduates dream of—working his way up the ranks aboard luxury yachts. Starting as a deckhand, he tirelessly honed his skills, eventually obtaining his U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. His career trajectory took an impressive leap when he captained several notable yachts, including the high-profile 118-foot (36-meter) superyacht Adler, a fast craft capable of reaching 35 knots.
His work on Adler was instrumental in shaping his future career moves. In the early 1990s, he transitioned to Baglietto, one of Italy’s premier shipyards, where he focused on serving U.S. clients for yacht sales and new construction projects. It was here that Buddy’s talent for building rapport within the industry blossomed, providing him with opportunities to navigate both sides of the Atlantic with skill and ease. After a fruitful stint with Baglietto, he joined Lürssen, another heavyweight in yacht manufacturing, where he continued his role as an American representative until 2010. The camaraderie and relationships he fostered during these years left a lasting imprint on his colleagues.
Following his tenure with Lürssen, Haack launched Taylor Lane Yacht & Ship, a venture dedicated to managing yacht refits, repairs, and other services. This company operated in Dania Beach and Fort Pierce, Florida, areas that were relatively undeveloped in terms of yachting services at the time. Using his knowledge of the local landscape, Haack undertook numerous successful projects, positioning his company as a key player in the burgeoning yacht service market. His leadership at Taylor Lane eventually led him to become the managing partner of Fort Pierce Yacht & Ship, where he aimed to redevelop part of the port into a superyacht refit yard, although the contract was ultimately awarded to Derecktor Shipyards. Nonetheless, Haack’s commitment to his craft and clients never wavered as his team continued to operate nearby.
Beyond his practical work in the yachting industry, Buddy Haack was also an accomplished author, having penned three influential books. Co-authoring with Doug Hoogs, he released Megayacht Wisdom in 1995 and its sequel, Megayacht Wisdom II, in 2004, both offering valuable insights on buying, owning, and operating megayachts. In 2012, they collaborated again on Megayacht: True Stories of Adventure, Drama, and Tragedy at Sea, a narrative compiling ten gripping real-life accounts from the maritime world, including harrowing tales of piracy and incredible rescues.
Colleagues and industry peers remember Haack fondly. Michael Breman, senior sales director at Lürssen, reflected on their two-decade collaboration, stating, “It was a privilege to work with Buddy intensely… I always enjoyed his company and his sense of humor.” His reputation for integrity, positivity, and genuine kindness resonated throughout the industry, solidifying his place as a beloved figure within the yachting community.
In honor of his life and contributions to the marine industry, a celebration of Buddy Haack’s life is set to take place on July 25 at the Haack Family Farm in Groveland, Florida. The service will occur at the farm’s picturesque Little Christus Chapel, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the sea and those who navigated it.
