Nigeria Strengthens Long-Term Energy Security with New Oil Discovery

Nigerian integrated energy company Renaissance Africa Energy has made a new oil discovery offshore Nigeria, supporting the country’s strategy to expand crude oil reserves, increase production, and strengthen long-term energy security.

The JK-004 exploration well, positioned within Oil Mining Lease (OML) 74, has encountered light oil-bearing intervals across seven reservoirs, spanning approximately 1,000 feet. This significant find not only confirms the prospectivity of the acreage but also strengthens the exploration potential within the lease, as reported by the African Energy Chamber (AEC).

This discovery aligns seamlessly with Nigeria’s ambitious strategy to bolster its crude oil production. The country aims to increase output to 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) in the near term and reach 2 million bpd by 2027, eventually targeting 4 million bpd by 2030. Additionally, Nigeria is focused on expanding its reserve base to ensure long-term sustainable production.

As it stands, Nigeria boasts approximately 37.01 billion barrels of proven crude oil and condensate reserves, with a reserve life expectancy of around 59 years. Such figures underscore the nation’s strong foothold within the global energy landscape and reflect its potential for future growth.

“The JK-004 discovery demonstrates that exploration remains the lifeblood of our industry and reinforces the importance of continued investment in unlocking Nigeria’s hydrocarbon potential,” stated NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of AEC. His comments highlight the critical role exploration plays in not just resource discovery but in driving national economic growth.

Moreover, Ayuk pointed out that the burgeoning “Drill Baby Drill” movement in Nigeria is increasingly being spearheaded by indigenous companies. These firms possess a deep understanding of the local environment and the necessity for long-term exploration investments. This achievement by Renaissance Africa Energy exemplifies the innovation, technical expertise, and determination required to unlock the continent’s energy potential.

Ayuk’s message is clear: investments in exploration not only contribute to job creation but also enhance local capacity, thereby positioning Nigeria as a competitively viable destination in the upstream sector of the global energy market.
